A west Michigan dog rescuer is looking for a good home for a very special dog who is going to need a lot of help.

Kathy Guminski runs Pit Stop Rescue, and she is always looking for dogs in need.

When she saw Maya she knew she had to do something.

"I saw a post that said look if we can't find an adopter by Friday we're going to have to euthanize her," Guminski said.

The 7-month-old puppy has spent the majority of her life in a crate, and was born with a spinal deformity that makes it hard to use her back legs. They are also weak from sitting for days at a time.

After three weeks of working with Kathy, Maya has made huge improvements.

"This dog has more try, more determination than any pit that has ever came through our house."

Kathy asked for help through a "Go Fund Me" page and got enough to buy Maya a wheelchair.

Now Maya needs surgery from sitting in her cage for so long.

"She's already going to be somebody's really good dog. They just have to be willing to help her out. I mean, eventually, I honestly think she might not need that chair."

But most of all, she needs a family.

"I know when they go to the shelter to look for a dog, they don't envision a little black scrawny pit bull that needs a wheelchair. But none of us are perfect," Guminski stated.
