Fern stared him straight in the eyes and took a deep breath, drawing strength from the clean forest air. “I would never do anything to hurt you or anyone else, not if I knew it would cause harm.” She straightened her spine. “I’ve lived for years in the shadow of three talented ForestStryders and never slipped up. I know most dragons think of MindStryders as this thing to be feared, but that’s not all there is to us. I defend myself, of course. But don’t you, as well? It hurts when dragons think I’m this horrible thing that’s going to invade their thoughts and strip them of their essence.”

So, I’ll find my way without your help. I say it’ll take me a day, tops.”

She had barely thought about her encounter with her Mother as if avoiding it in her mind and in her own reality, acknowledging that her Mom was tiranicle now but not addressing what had gone down between them that night. 
   The whole week she had been on the run. Looking back on it now she had been food-deprived as well as even more horribly sleep deprived and all she could think about was to keep going until she could go no further. When she lived in the moment and nothing could affect her. When all she could think of was to keep going. All she could think about was continuing on for the sake of being strong for the dragon who had also been injured by the queen.

Let them give up their freedom and finally be in the talons of someone who cares. I was abandoned when I was a dragonet, but I didn’t let it break me and I am a better queen because of it. I don’t let my dragons suffer because of my fathers mistakes. I don’t let my past pain punish my dragons and squall me so terribly so as to become the villain of my own story. I rose above that and have become the queen that saves. All those rioting dragons. IronGaze didn’t blame them, though she thought they were foolish. Bloodshed was after all justified by reason. Let the dragons I care about be my reason.
