    AVID Field Trip

    By: Reana Barboza

Monday on January 29, 2018. Mrs. Koch’s AVID class, at Woodward High School, decided to take a field trip to Owens Community College. Other TPS schools also joined the field trip through the BGSU talent search program to Owen’s main campus. Over 23 students from Woodward High school went on the trip to Owens.

Over the course of this school year, AVID has already visited three colleges through the BGSU talent search program. This is now the fourth.

Owens is a community college with its main campus located in Perrysburg, Ohio. It’s other campuses are located in downtown Toledo and in Findlay, Ohio.

When the schools arrived to the Owens Community College campus, every student received a different colored card, symbolizing the kind of major the student wants to get into at Owens, or in general. Students were then directed to a huge room where everyone was split off into groups based off of the different colored cards. Tourists led the students to different and best departments that Owens has to offer.

The first stop was the Broadcasting department where students learned the different technologies of broadcasting and making different projects for the community. The next stop was to the Fine Arts Department where photography classes, graphics design, general art electives, and instrumental classes are offered. Students from Woodward did not seem so interested in just about all the classes offered except the graphics designing classes.

The following department that got everyone excited to think about as a major, is the fire science department. Owens offers classes for those who want to become a paramedic or a firefighter. The Toledo Fire Academy sometimes has their program take place at Owens Community College because of how much simulators and open space there is at the Fire Science department.

The last stop was the Welding Department in another building on campus. They offer good education and curriculum for those who want to go into welding. There is good money in that career for those who want to pursue that, but it isn’t for everyone.

Owens is a place where if you want a career in fire science, welding, or a backup college if you didn’t make it into a college you wanted to be enrolled in.

A Woodward student, Alejandra Jimenez, even said, “I do not want to attend Owens but their nursing program is cheaper than UT’s. It is something to consider than be your ‘first choice college.’”

Another Woodward student, Jasmine said that, “You will save money. I would really rather just go there and make a career than be in debt while being in my career.”

Owens Community College is not for everyone, but if interested in being a firefighter, a welder, a policeman, or a nurse possibly, it more likely a place to go when anyone also wants to save money.
