No Bin

Fabric is an object that causes problems at recycling facilities, tangling machinery and causing a nuisance. If the fabric is clothing, and it is still wearable or suitable for reuse, then keep it out of any bin. If it’s beyond being reused or gifted to a charity, don’t place it in the recycling bin. Old fabric can go in the waste bin as a last resort.

Waste Bin

If your council accepts food scraps, then anything organic can be placed in your organics bin. The organics bin motto is ‘If it grows, then in it goes"

Green Bin

The commercial composting process generates so much heat (upwards of 70º Celsius) that it will kill weed seeds and diseases in plants that home composting can’t.

Cheese, like other organic matter, can be disposed in a green bin.

If a pizza box is dirty or greasy, compost facilities can easily break down cardboard. On the other hand, if your pizza box is clean and free of grease, go ahead and recycle the box in your yellow bin.

Aluminium foil should be balled up, about the size of your fist and placed in the recycling bin. Aluminium is 100% recyclable.

Yellow Bin

In the recycling process paper is separated from these plastic windows. There is no need to remove them from envelopes for recycling. Place them in your recycling bin.

Ideally if the can is empty (using all the contents ensures you get best value from what’s inside). Empty aerosol cans like deodorant, cooking spray, insect sprays and even empty spray paint cans can be recycled.

Put it in the green organics bin – it is a great feedstock for compost. If it is put into the recycling bin, the tiny bits of paper are too small and get lost in the sorting process and can’t be recovered. Up to 10% of your home compost can be paper or cardboard.

Soft plastics from packaging, plastic wrapping from newspapers and magazines and shopping bags are a nuisance in kerbside recycling facilities. Think office paper recycling – where a dedicated system with a dedicated stream gets the best outcome. Soft plastics should be taken to participating supermarkets where they are handled differently to hard plastics which can be recycled through the kerbside recycling.
