    20 Things You Should Know About Mark McGowan

    Mark McGowan has been a Member of WA Parliament for 20 years as of today - so here's 20 interesting facts about the WA Labor Leader!

    1. Mark’s first home was in Safety Bay, which he purchased with his wife Sarah in 1997.

    2. They now live in Rockingham with their three children, Samuel, Alexander and Amelia... and their poodle cross Georgie.

    3. He grew up in rural New South Wales and has a younger brother Michael.

    4. He lived and worked at the squash courts his parents owned and operated, he was hit by a flying racquet and suffered a fractured skull.

    5. All that practice served him well and he played in the National Junior Championships in 1982 in the Under 15 Division and won the Plate.

    6. After leaving home, he attended the University of QLD at the same time as Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and studied law

    7. When he arrived in Perth in 1991 he drove across the Nullarbor in his Toyota Corolla, with all his possessions in the boot

    8. He was a Lieutenant in the Navy and was posted to HMAS STIRLING on Garden Island, Rockingham

    9. He drew his sidearm on a crocodile in self defence while patrolling on an island off the Kimberley coast in the Navy. The crocodile got away unharmed.

    10. To relax, he likes to go camping with his family in the Lane Poole Reserve near Dwellingup or in Busselton.

    11. He had a melanoma removed in the year 2000.

    12. In 1997 he was awarded a bravery medal for rescuing a man from a burning car.

    13. He met his wife Sarah at the 1993 Federal election. She was working part time for the electoral commission and is now a primary school teacher.

    14. In 2014, Mark and Sarah took in a homeless German backpacker named Tim and looked after him for three months.

    15. Mark and Sarah got married in 1996. A week earlier, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the state seat of Rockingham.

    16. He was Parliamentary Secretary to Premier Geoff Gallop from 2001-2005

    17. As Minister in 2006, he introduced the small bar reforms that have revolutionised and revitalised Perth’s social scene. He also approved the Gorgon and FMG projects.

    18. In 1993 his pride and joy, a Datsun 1600 caught fire and burnt out. Shortly thereafter his windsurfer sank.

    19. Mark is addicted to Subway - he loves a veggie delite!
