Newcastle

This Midlands city was often overlooked on England’s tourist trail but is now getting the appreciation it deserves after being named 2021’s UK City of Culture. Coventry’s history alone is enough to keep you agog for hours. It was a manufacturing superstar, leading Britain’s WWII efforts, and was similarly important during the Middle Ages thanks to its textiles trade. Find out about the former by visiting the rubble of Coventry Cathedral, which was bombed during the 1940 Coventry Blitz. St Michael's Cathedral sits next to it, having been rebuilt alongside the ruins in the '60s.
Its modern offerings are just as engaging. The city is full of craft breweries like Castle Yard Taproom and Twisted Barrel, and you can drink a pint in the city’s oldest church spire at Dhillon's Spire Bar.
