Taika Waititi Spilled The Tea On Playing Hitler In His New Movie, Jojo Rabbit

"I learned very early on... there's no way to pitch this film" -TW

If you’ve been sleeping on the massively talented filmmaker, director, and actor, Taika Waititi, I’m glad you’ve finally joined the appreciation party.

You might know Taika Waititi as the person who created artistic space for Chris Hemsworth to showcase his comedic talents in playing Thor. Taika wrote and directed Thor: Ragnarok, a film that earned over $850 million dollars at the box office.

On Wednesday, October 16th, our beloved New Zealander spoke with Jimmy Kimmel about his new film, Jojo Rabbit, based on the novel, Caging Skies by Christine Leunens. Taika wrote the screenplay, directed the film, and starred in it.

The satirical film follows the tale of a lonely German boy named Jojo whose imaginary friend is Adolf Hitler.

In Taika's interview with Jimmy, there were a few highlights. Oh, who am I kidding? The whole thing was a highlight. Except when Jimmy referred to the people of New Zealand as "the New Zealish" and Taika made this face.

Jimmy made a shoutout to Taika’s mom.

Then Jimmy asked, “I was wondering what the pitch must’ve been like [for this film to be produced]?”

“I said to a friend of mine while I was writing [the script], ‘well I think this [story] could be very good, it’s about a little boy in the Hitler Youth."

Jimmy later asked, “did you have yourself in mind to play Hitler?”

Juggling his director and actor roles for the movie, Taika admits he sometimes forgot he looked like Hitler on set.

Keeping things lighthearted with a little "Korg" flair, Taika told the actors, "you don’t have to do what I said. It’s not an order. You know, you just do what you want. It’s up to you. You’re free! You’re a free actor. It’s up to you.”

Some movie-watchers have expressed mixed reviews about Jojo Rabbit and its messages, questioning its ability to be a successful satire.

If you're looking to form your own thoughts on the film, it opens at select theaters beginning October 18th.
