12 Reasons It's Totally OK To Be Clueless About Your College Major

"Undecided" should be its own major, tbh.

1. Almost nobody knows what they want to do at 18 years old.

Well, a few people do, and that's great for them. But the percentage of college freshmen with a solid grasp on their career goals is probably a lot smaller than you think. The rest of us were as clueless as you when we enrolled in school. And that is A-OK.

2. You can crush it in your gen-ed classes to boost your GPA.

Transition to the college experience by taking entry-level gen-ed courses. If you study hard, you can build up a killer GPA, which will help you access more competitive major programs whenever you do make your decision.

3. That major you're leaning toward isn't going anywhere.

If you think you know what you want to do, it still doesn't hurt to take some time in college to confirm your interests. The major program you're considering will still be there in your sophomore year, and you'll have time to see it up close instead of reading about it in a brochure.

4. You won't choose a major only to find out you hate it.

Being undecided is lightyears better than choosing a major based on no information and then feeling trapped when you realize it's not right for you. It happens more than you'd think. All the more reason to take your time.

5. It will help you find your place in a fast-changing job market.

Four years is an eternity now. Even in more "stable" fields, groundbreaking technology and research are changing the way we do just about everything. Some jobs that weren't "a thing" when you enter college may be fast-growing markets by the time you graduate.

6. You have the freedom to dabble.

This is your time to experiment! Learn to play the clarinet. Or try your hand at HTML coding. There aren't many times in life where your opportunities (and your calendar) are so outrageously wide open, so take your time and enjoy it.

7. Being a well-rounded graduate is actually more marketable.

Even students who are laser focused on a field of study benefit from taking elective courses that help them "fill out" intellectually. Most employers are actually looking for well-rounded job candidates whose experiences go beyond the classroom.

8. You stay open to new interests and new discoveries.

College courses aren't like high school classes where you're just covering the basics. Once you really dig into a subject, you may discover that you're actually fascinated by biochemistry or that you're crazy talented at graphic design. It's really important to stay open to that.

9. You can take a chance on that thing you've always wanted to try.

One huge benefit of college is that the downside of trying and failing is so incredibly small. The system is set up that way on purpose. This means that now is the time to take chances. So start that travel blog or podcast you've been thinking about.

10. When people ask your major, you can just say, "Life."

Look, you're gonna get the question. Just be ready for it and don't be intimidated by it. Remember that everyone's just kinda making it up as they go along, and embrace your undecidedness.

At least one study found that students who delay choosing a major, or are open to changing the one they chose before college, have a slightly higher graduation rate than students who stick with the major they chose at enrollment. Kinda crazy, right?
