Only Bra-Wearing Experts Will Get An A(Cup) On This Test

The modern version of the bra we know and love today was first [invented in France in 1869](https://www.vogue.com/article/history-of-the-bra-vanity-fair-lingerie). It was originally called the _corselet gorge_.

While the uncomfyness of the corset _definitely_ didn't help matters — the US War Industries Board actually [asked women to stop buying corsets](https://www.npr.org/2014/08/05/337860700/bra-history-how-a-war-shortage-reshaped-modern-shapewear) in 1917. The reason? They needed the metal used in corset frames for wartime ammunition. This made way for bras to steal the spotlight.

Why did women stop wearing corsets and start wearing bras?  


Bras were one size fits all for a while, [but a bra company in the 1930s](https://www.insidehook.com/article/history/100-years-brassieres-inside-historical-evolution-bra) was the first to assign cup sizes for a better fit. A+ to them.

The inventors of the sports bra joked that they needed a jockstrap for their breasts while working out, so they simply sewed two together! There’s a myth that underwires block the drainage of lymph fluid, which can cause breast cancer.
