What Cosplayers Think About Halloween Costumes?

"It has much more to do with our 'nerd' community."

As New York Comic Con has come to an end this year and Halloween is nearing, I decided to interview fellow students of the Fashion Institute of Technology's Anime and Sci-Fi Club about what their opinion is about cosplaying and Halloween costumes.

"I really love being able to see everyone around me dress up instead of feeling like a minority for a day. Sometimes it's a lot more fun to see people who make their own costumes and to me, cosplays shows how much effort someone puts into their costumes."

"In cosplay there's so much preparation that goes into costume making, but physically and mentally it's extremely rewarding to know you can change yourself into a completely different person compared to Halloween costumes."

"Cosplay is better because you're dressing as a character and also acting as it too. Halloween costumes are just costumes. That's it."

"I believe cosplay is better than Halloween costumes because there is a lot of passion, blood, sweat, and tears put into every cosplay. It's an all year round type of ordeal and that's what makes it enjoyable."

"I love both Halloween and cosplaying, but I would much rather cosplay because I don't have to wait once a year to dress up as anyone. The time and effort put into our cosplays shows how much this means to us."

"Cosplay is better than Halloween costumes because at least it's not Harley Quinn."

"I find that cosplay is a way more elaborate method of dressing than Halloween. There are more creative aspects put into cosplay. People are also much more emotionally attached to cosplay and it helps them (including myself) feel good to freely experiment with their appearance."

"Let's face it, Halloween costumes are pretty cheap (despite their big price tags) and tacky look. If you want to be Iron Man, don't look to a Halloween store. All you will get is a puffy suit and a mask with an elastic string tied around it. But an Iron Man cosplay? You'll see people with full suits, lights, and full helmets with a re-tractor mask piece. For me, Halloween is just another excuse to put on a wig and cape."

"Cosplay is much more than just dressing up in a costume, it's not just about the end game. Cosplay is the process of making that costume and meeting friends who can share that with you."

"Cosplays are treated with better care because they represent the characters we love. It could be from a role model to how you relate to them. You see a part of yourself in that character and want to treat said cosplay with the same admiration for that character. It's the best source of pride to wear a cosplay you've taken care of and love."

I am sure many cosplayers can relate to these opinions stated from above. I bear no ill manner towards anybody who enjoy and love Halloween and Halloween costumes. I just wanted to show my support for the people in the cosplay community who takes cosplaying seriously and is passionate about it. Sometimes cosplaying can be seen as something weird to the general public and they don't understand why cosplay is so important in someone's life and why it is so enjoyable to be portraying as someone else.

So that's all folks. Have a safe and Happy Halloween.

P.S. I want to thank everyone from the FIT Anime and Sci-Fi club for participating in this article.
