10 Dances You Probably Didn't Know Had Names

You've seen these limb-flailing patterns from around the world, but you probably don't know what to call them.

1. The act of moving your knees in and out while street dancing is called "Jerkin."

2. And that seemingly random flailing of the arms to the beat isn't random at all. It's called "Waacking."

3. Not to be confused with free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement involving the arms, head, legs, chest, and feet, which is called "Krumping."

4. Even jumping up and down and kicking has its own category of dances, called "Jumpstyle."

5. Now bopping and moving your arms front to back while you go side to side is sometimes called "Snapping."

6. Freeform expression of personal style, optical illusions, and storytelling with your dance seems kind of nebulous, but it's a real thing that originated in Oakland, called "Turf Dance."

7. Moving the torso forward and backward in a rippling motion, as if a wave were passing through it is called "Jacking." It's used in a lot of House styles.

8. Circling yourself like a hunchback-chicken hybrid with an attitude that screams "I just smelled something bad" is called "Thizzling."

9. Stomping around like you're a clumsy marionette controlling your own strings while trying not to step on any cracks (or you'll break your mother's back) is called "Jookin."

10. And of course, twitching and ticking like you just swallowed a wasp nest and the wasps are desperately trying to get out is simply called "Face Dancing."

Now that you're a walking thesaurus of the art of dance, familiarize with the latest dance trend: "Phone, Keys, Gum."
