Plastic Bags are not accepted in the Town of Newmarket's blue bin recycling program. Plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down. Recycle your plastic bags through the Plastic Bag Take-Back program by bringing them to local retailers to be recycled. Which material is accepted in the blue recycling bin?

Aluminum can be recycled an unlimited number of times. Aluminum is 100% recyclable and can be recycled over and over again without losing its quality through the recycling process.

How many times can aluminum be recycled?

Not all items made of plastic can be recycled. While most plastic items have the recycling symbol on them, it does not necessarily mean the item is recyclable. The number inside the symbol signifies the main chemical compound or resin used to make the plastic container. It is best to confirm what items are accepted for recycling by using our online My-Waste App at [newmarket.ca/wasteandrecycling](http://newmarket.ca/wasteandrecycling)

Anything made of plastic can be recycled in your blue recycling bin.

A Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is where collected recyclable material is received, sorted (both mechanically and manually) and processed. Sorted recyclable materials are baled and then shipped and marketed to end-users as raw materials for re-manufacturing and re-processing. Blue bin materials collected curbside from Newmarket is taken to York Region’s MRF located in East Gwillimbury.

If you are not sure where materials belong, you can check:

Metal lids need to be removed from the container to ensure that they can be properly recycled when being processed at the recycling facility.

Metal lids from glass bottles and jars do not need to be removed and placed in the blue bin separately.

Cardboard boxes are not an approved container to place blue bin materials in. Blue bin materials must be placed inside blue recycling bins that do not exceed 22 gallons in size. Glass jars need to be emptied and cleaned before placing into the blue recycling bin. Food residue left inside glass jars can lead to contamination at the recycling facility.

Putting materials inside of each other can contaminate one or more of the commodities being recycled. And although stacking recyclables inside other recyclables may help you save time when recycling, this can slow the sorting process. To help the sorting process work best, items should not be stacked inside one another.

Carboard may be placed beside the blue bin if flattened, bundled and tied with twine or string. Make sure that bundles do not exceed 36" X 36" X 8".
