You see all those big fancy effects every Guy Fawkes' Night but do you actually know their names?

Do You Know The Real Names For These Types Of Firework?

It involves a ball of sparks expanding before a final, bright burst of sparks, each leaving trails as they fall to the ground.

It's called a "brocade".

What is this kind of firework called?

A modern firework featuring lots of crackling, strobing effects.

It's a "Dragon's Egg".

It's a "Tourbillon".

It's fired from a mortar and leaves a shimmering trail behind it. Several are often launched to explode close together, to create overlapping bursts.

It's a "Comet".

It's a "Willow".

Notable for its intricate, overlapping lines, made by several projectiles fired out of the main shell as it bursts.

It's a "Crossette".

It's a "Peony".

They're a relatively quiet firework that come in lots of different colours. They're often launched in bursts.

It's a "Fish".

Pretty much the classic firework effect: concentric spheres of sparks in a symmetrical burst.

It's a "Chrysanthemum".

Because it looks a bit like a palm tree, obviously.

It's a "Palm".

Which is the sticky-up bit in the middle of a flower. It's a bit like a Chrysanthemum, but with an extra, central burst.

It's a "Pistil".

It's designed to mimic the rapid flickering of strobe lighting, by launching stars out of its main shell which brighten and dim in a rapid sequence.

It's a "Strobe".

So you don't know a great deal about fireworks. But let's be honest here: your chances in life are not going to be significantly affected by not knowing a Palm from a Dragon's Egg. You'll be fine.

And I bet you've learned something today, about Pistils and Chrysanthemums and so on.

Nothing better than standing out in the mist in some darkened park, going "oooh" at all the fireworks, is there?
