Destructive Martial Conflict Shown In Media

Martial conflict is shown in media, but it is very rare that we truly see destructive martial conflict. I am going to explain two sub-categories in Destructive Conflict with short media clips. The first four clips with give a clear indict action of the four categories in Gottman's 4 Horsemen of Apocalypse. The last Gif with give an insight on Intimate Partner Violence.

    1. Critism

As you could see on the clip, Michael and Jan from the tv series "The Office" are having communication issues. Instead of facing it head on, Michael chooses to attack Jan by criticizing her. He states to the dinner party that she is unemployed, is unable to pay back the "plasma" tv she broke.

    2. Contempt

This is considered the worst of Gottman's horsemen. In the video clip, you see Ted (the bear) call his wife a lot of nasty names and she also does name calling back. They both pick at each others personality, which hurt them both, leading them to violence.

    3. Defensiveness

Dean and Cindy, from Blue Valentine, are both struggling to communicate with one another, so Cindy tiptoes the conversation making Dean defensive. This horseman is when a partner defends their behavior and they project blame on the other.

    4. Stonewalling

Stonewalling is the last horseman and is commonly done by men. The partner really does not seem to care what the other has to say. It is like talking to a wall. A seen in the clips from how I met your mother, Barney choses to avoid conflict by ignoring Robin and walking away.
