Sea turtles are surely one of the most adorable and shy creatures in nature. Being the survivors of the mass extinction a hundred million years ago, these magnificent turtles are now facing the risk of extinction.

There are five known varieties of turtles to be found nesting around the southern coast of Sri Lanka; they are namely Olive Ridley Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Leatherhead Turtle. Sadly all five species have been identified as being endangered.

What are Turtle Hatcheries?

These are locations set-up where sea turtle eggs are conserved and hatched under human-made conditions. Here the hatchlings are provided with food and care till they reach the ideal size to be let out to the vast ocean.

The Hatchery in Habaraduwa

This is one of the most significant hatcheries in Sri Lanka which is also a nonprofit organization known by the name “Sea Turtle Farm and Hatchery”. It is run solely towards the objective of protecting sea turtles. This hatchery has taken many initiatives to protect these feeble creatures. The hatchery has released close to 760,000 turtles to the sea. Marvellous isn’t it?

It is a two-hour journey from Colombo and the place is open to the public daily from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm. If you are staying at hotels like Mermaid Hotel & Club or other such Kalutara hotel options, this place is really close by and you can visit for a relaxing evening.
