If you are considering getting private registration plates in the UK, you need to know what you should be doing to ensure that you remain within the law.
Buying A Private Registration Plate
There are 3 ways that you will be able to buy a private registration plate in the UK. The first is to buy the plate directly from the DVLA. The private plates that are offered by the DVLA will be the new number plates which have been released and you will be the first person to own the plate.
The second option is to buy the private plate from a DVLA auction. These auctions are held around the country and will take place around 6 times each year. You will be able to view a list of the plates that are going to be auctioned beforehand and you will be able to bid in person, over the phone or online.
The last option for buying private plates is to work through a private dealer or to buy directly from a private individual. This is often the only option when you are looking for a specific number plate which has already been sold to someone by the DVLA. You will generally have to pay more for the plate when using this option and you need to ensure that you have the right documents from the seller to ensure that you can use the plate.
Assigning The Plate To Your Vehicle
Once you have the private plate, you will need to assign it to your vehicle with the DVLA. You should not place the private plate on the vehicle until this has been done because you will be using it illegally if you do. There are different steps that you need to take when you assign the plate to a vehicle you already own and when you assign it to a new vehicle. However, you will need to have either the V778 retention document, the V750 certificate of entitlement of an online reference number to assign the plate.
If you are assigning the plate to a vehicle you already own, you can do this online or by post. You will need to ensure that the vehicle is registered with the DVLA, is available for inspection, can move n its own power and has been taxed for the last 5 years. You will not have to pay for the assignment and the DVLA will send you a new log book in the post.
If you are buying a new car and want the private plates to be assigned to it, you can generally ask the car dealer to do this for you. You will have to provide the dealer with either the V778 or V750 document. The dealer will also be able to transfer the private places from the car you already own to the new car.
