The Kennel Club (UK) recorded only 18 Otterhound's in 2023.   
Otter hunting was banned in 1978, which resulted in a rapid decline in the breed. They are a large breed with a weather resistant double coat which is oily, often odorous and requires regular grooming. Their webbed feet, well developed nostrils and scenting powers make them great dogs for the active lifestyle!   
The other breeds pictured are a Smooth Hungarian Vizsla, Lurcher and Rhodesian Ridgeback.

The Kennel Club (UK) recorded 79 Field Spaniels which is a slow rise in numbers for the breed.  
They are medium in size, usually in between a cocker and springer spaniel. Traditionally defined by their solid coat colours, the breed standard now accepts them in of Liver/Black/Tan and Roans.

This is a Field Spaniel!

The Kennel Club recorded 36 dogs in 2023.  
Originating in the Scottish Hebrides, the breed can be traced back to at least 1570 in  Dr John Caius, (Court physician to Elizabeth I) in his book “of English Dogges”. Initially bred to hunt badgers and foxes this little dog was fearless but also a loyal, loving companion. Most notably recognised in the memorialisation of the legend and later monument of Greyfriars Bobby; a dog owned by a Scottish shepherd. When his master died Bobby returned daily to the grave for 14 years and was fed by local residents. When Bobby died in 1872 a monument was erected in Greyfriars churchyard in Edinburgh. The modern Skye terrier is larger with a longer and heavier coat.

The Kennel Club (UK) last recorded 9 of these dogs in 2022!  
A large hound, they stand between the Foxhound and a Beagle. Traced back to the thirteenth century, they were originally bred to follow on foot hunting hares but later cross breeding led them to be faster and able to follow on horseback. They are affectionate, smart and need an active lifestyle.

The Smooth Collie has always lived in the shadows of its more glamorously coated cousin but the two have always existed side by side. During the 19th century were shorter on the leg and thicker set than the Rough Collie. The infusion of greyhound blood to give more elegant and refinement. They were then mated back to the Rough Collie and the breeds today look almost identical apart from the coat. Queen Victoria would take her dogs to Balmoral and Windsor Castle with her favourite being Sharp who was a Smooth.

The Kennel Club (UK) recorded 93 of these dogs in 2023.  
The breed has had a few names, including the miniature Black and Tan (UK) and in the USA the Toy Manchester Terrier. Origins point to the Manchester Terrier, a ratting breed introduced during the industrial Revolution. The possible input of the Italian Greyhound, produced the miniature, fine boned black and tan breed with candle flame ears terrier we see today. Despite this the English Toy Terrier was still able to be used for ratting; used in the rat pits in the 19th century. A highly intelligent breed with an elegant and extended trotting action.

Which of these is an English Toy Terrier?

The Kennel Club (UK) recorded 27 of these dogs in 2023 which is nearly a 50% decline since 2022!  
They’re golden-liver coated and the rarest of the land spaniels with a rich history. Mr A E Fuller of Rosehill Park, near Hastings in Sussex one of the founders of the breed and he developed this spaniel for working in the dense cover of the local terrain; this breed is low to ground and powerfully built with a thick protective skin to get through the densest of undergrowth. There is a fairly vocal aspect to this breed with some indications there might have been an input of hound blood. This helps a handler keep track of the whereabouts of the dog when not visible when working.  
The dogs of Mr Fuller were sold when he died in 1847, so the breed became scarce. Despite the breed being threatened by potential extinction, there has been progress both in type and numbers in recent years.

The Kennel Club (UK) recorded 83 of these dogs in 2023 which is the highest they’ve been in since the first recording in 2017 (53)!  
The Curly Coated Retriever is supposedly the oldest of the Retriever breeds. They are also the tallest. The signature coat of small tight curls, is an acknowledgement to their ancestor, the English Water Spaniel (now extinct) which was crossed with a Retriever most likely the Labrador. Poodle was also bred into the mix to give the tightness of curl. They were originally bred to retriever ducks from, their coat has a waterproof quality, which is either black or liver and requires regular grooming.

The Kennel Club (UK) recorded 58 dogs in 2023 which is a sharp decline from 2022 that was recorded at 115.   
A native Irish breed, they were developed as a badger hunter in the glen of County Wicklow. Traceable to the 17th century their low to ground, fearless and tenacious, strong and substantial are still seen in the modern breed. It is thought that they may share ancestry with the Soft Coated Wheaten, Kerry and Irish Terriers.

The Kennel Club recorded 108 dogs in 2023 which is a decline since 2022, although the breed has seen a rise and fall throughout the year with the lowest being 94 in 2019.  
It is believed that the Lancashire Heeler is the result of a cross between the Welsh Corgi and the Manchester Terrier; from the time when cattle were herded from Wales to the markets in the Ormskirk area. The breed has been very popular in that area long before recognition from The Kennel Club and was known as the Ormskirk Heeler or the Ormskirk terrier. The breed is a lovely combination, inheriting the distinguishing thumbs marks on the front legs from the Manchester terrier and the lowness to ground and heeling instinct from the Corgi. They are a lively, intelligent and long lived; having gained some well-deserved popularity as a family dog.
