    The Dutch Reformed Church – Most Probably The Oldest Church In Sri Lanka

    The Galle Fort

    The Galle Fort is one of the coolest places in Sri Lanka to visit and is loaded with antique buildings where some have even been converted to boutique hotels in Sri Lanka by entities such as Mosvold Hotels. The Dutch Reformed Church, aka Groote Kerk, is such a building, and is one of the island’s oldest churches.

    The Original One

    The original reformed church was said to have been located near the Galle Clock Tower (pictured above) but was destroyed in some way.

    Architecture

    The church was constructed in the Doric style that was very popular during that time and is very similar to the Wolvendaal Church which is in Colombo.

    Restoration

    The current church is the third version of it, and was fully restored thanks to financial help from the Dutch embassy.
