    Finish This Story

Here is the set up for a thriller.

The breeze picked up, guiding the fallen leaves silently across Freymoore street. Cars packed with children emptied out in their driveways while mothers chatted over the hedges with one another. Following an uneventful summer, autumn seemed to liven up the suburban streets of Linport, considering that the couple of people pacing the streets have been the most bodies to be found outside of their homes in a while. The evening sky, still cloudless, darkened slightly at the turn of the hour, casting small shadows along the front porches of the colonial styled homes that lined the streets.

“I really like the new English teacher, he’s a total chill guy. I feel like he’ll be an easy A” Isabella said. Looking up from her phone, she pushed her bangs out of her face for what seemed to be the 100th time, to glance at her friends.

“You’re lucky you got Mr. Grimford, I got stuck with Mr.Zovkotchik. He’s a harsh grader and he assigns a new essay every week.” Oneil groaned. “Good thing Claire is in my class, you’re gonna help me with my papers right?” Turning left, Oneil and Isabella looked to Claire.

Claire did not respond, nor did she look at her friends. Following her gaze, Oneil noticed her eyes were focused on the sky. Taking heed, the two teens looked up as well to see what held their friend’s attention. Above the nearly bare trees, a small flash of light ran across the sky leaving behind a skid of blue gaseous looking streaks across the sky. The faux comet grew brighter, lighting up the streets than any sun rise ever has. Soon enough the streets were flooded with neighbors, pouring in to see the spectacle before them, and it was not only Freymoore Street but every neighbouring street in Linport. The residents of Spellburn Street peered from their nestled ranch-houses, while business owners along Main Street and North-River Way raced to the docks to get a closer look.

“Holy crap” Isabella fumbled with her phone and began recording the streaking mass across the sky. “People on Instagram are not going to believe this”. As the bulk of light reached the bend of the horizon, something in its movement changed. Instead of a slow glide, suddenly the makeshift comet picked up speed and curved violently into toward the ground. Disappearing among the backwoods, a moment of silence befell the town. There was an unsettling stillness, as though the town was holding its breath not knowing what to expect next. Just as the last tail of blue smoke faded from sight, a grating shrill replaced the silence. Startled by the howl the townspeople dashed into their homes or sought refuge within stores, while shrieks of panic reverberated along the town square as shoppers huddled themselves alongside cars and park benches.

The small church on Greywell Avenue became overwhelmed with people pushing past one another and hiding among the pews. Some covered their ears while others gripped their hands together and spat out forgotten bits of prayers in hopes of something happening.
