What is a Charismatic Leader?

Alright, probably important to know what it is we're talking about here. The word "charismatic" was a term actually created by Weber himself, and it was used to describe a very specific kind of person--religious prophets. But more on that later. Charismatic leaders have exceptional skills, or are considered exemplary by their followers. They tend to promise change, and many have actually been extremely impactful in history. They do this by influencing and changing people's attitudes and values. Overall, you can find them all through history, and you probably know more than you think!

The Followers of a Charismatic Leader

The followers of a Charismatic Leader are essential, because the types of followers a leader attracts will directly reflect them. How the followers act in a leader's name will also shape the public's view of them. In fact, when you look at prophets, their word can be taken so seriously and considered so important that they maintain devoted followers hundreds of years after they pass away. There's actually over 2.2 billion people in the world who follow the words of one prophet... sound familiar?

Non Religious Charismatic Leaders

Cult Leaders

By far the most terrifying type of charismatic leader. Cult leaders exemplify the ability to deceive and persuade their followers to perform seemingly illogical acts in their name. One extreme example is James Jones, who convinced all of his followers to kill themselves in his name. Don't worry though, cult leaders tend to have little effect on the masses, and only create small tragic events in history. As long as you don't plan on worshipping a cat or killing things, you should be safe.

Political Leaders

This is not just limited to presidents and prime ministers. This type of charismatic leader is someone who can bring about great social change, and uses a combination of logic and emotion to gain a following that holds the same view. These leaders, unlike most religious prophets, do not perform any magical acts or miracles in order to convince their followers of their value. Instead, they posess the personality of these religious prophets, and have a persuasive way with words and confidence that reassures their followers that they can elicit greatly needed change.

Religious Prophets--the Epitome of the Charismatic Leader

Religious prophets are the epitome of a charismatic leader. Every other type of charismatic leader in history is merely an imitation of them, and their effect and power is completely secondary to that of these prophets. A prophet acts as a mediator between their followers and some higher spirit or God. They are a physical bride between the human and spiritual world, and communicate with these higher powers in order to guide their followers in effectively practicing religion. Once a religious prophet has established their power, which we explain how they do this later, their word is viewed as holy and representative of that of the Gods.

How to Become a Religious Prophet

In order to become a religious prophet, and the ideal charismatic leader, one obviously has to be charismatic. However, to prove a connection to a higher power, a religious leader must perform some sort of miraculous or magical act. To do this, they will first distinguish themselves and some object as greater than everything else that's just plain ordinary. For example, one legendary religious prophet, who claimed to be the son of God himself **hint, his name starts with a J** proved his heavenly power by turning water into wine. He then labeled the wine as a sacred object as well, and called it the Blood of Christ. This makes the object charismatic too, but it only is charismatic because Jesus is charismatic and made it that way. Overall, to be a prophet you gotta be good with words and performing miracles.

Why does it matter?

So why should you care about Charismatic Leaders and what they are in religious? First of all, these religious prophets were so powerful and impactful that their word is still coveted today, and many of their followers will perform acts in their name. Its actually amazing that an idea used to describe religious prophets has actually spread so much that we all know what it means and the different applications it has. And if someone IS a charismatic leader, they have the ability to enact great change upon society and history. Just think about the effects one man had on the entire course of history, with wars fought in the name of his teachings and millions, if not billions of people who believe in his word--Jesus. Weber was quite the theorist, let's just put it that way!
