Stony Brook Secrets

The main purpose of our project was to recreate a popular online trend, informative Buzzfeed pages, with a local twist. We have compiled a list places that are close by campus, the farthest being about 25 minutes away by car, so that students can have quick escapes from Stony Brook University. Most of the places are great hangout spots to either spend an evening or the day with friends.

Blue Point Brewery

Blue Point Brewery is located in Patchogue at 161 River ave, Patchogue, NY 11772 and about 28 minutes from campus. All visitors to the brewery get three samples included in their trip and additional samples start at just $1 and pints start at $4. You are also able to purchase jugs to fill with your favorite beer. This is a great place to go and taste the locally brewed beers and sit outside at the picnic tables to hangout with friends.

There are free tours of the brewery on saturdays at 1:00pm and 4:00pm, if you are to do a tour closed shoes are required. Also available for purchase are kegs, Packaged beer, Growlers and Blue Point gear.

Avalon Park & Preserve Barn

The Avalon Park & Preserve is about a 3 minute drive from campus located at 200 Harbor Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790. Yoga in the barn is one of the many activities that take place here and are wonderful to do as a get away from school. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening's around 6:30pm and Friday mornings around 9:30am yoga classes are held inside the barn and are priced between $12 - $15.

Brew Cheese

Brew Cheese is located in Stony Brook, 127 Main Street, Stony Brook, NY and is about a 4 minute ride from campus. They have delicious locally sourced cheese and craft beer. It’s a great way to spend the afternoon while hanging out with friends.

West Meadow Beach

West Meadow Beach is located in East Setauket and about a 12 minute drive from campus. This is a wonderful place to come relax and watch the sunset or enjoy the sun with friends.

The Bench Bar and Grill

The bench is located across the street from the Stony Brook Long Island Railroad Station. The bench caters to Stony Brook students because of it’s proximity, it offers a quick and easy escape from the overwhelming school week. The bench hosts nightly specials and a happy hour Sunday to Friday 4pm-8pm.

Monday Nights: Wing Night, one set price for unlimited beer and wings

Tuesday Nights: Taco Tuesdays, $3 tacos, beers, and shots

Wednesday Nights: Wine Down Wednesdays, $8 Flatbreads, $14 Bottles of Wine

Thursday Nights: Ladies Night, Ladies drink free just pay the cover charge.

Happy Hour: $5 appetizers and $3.75 Draft Beer, Wine, and Well Drinks

AMF Smithtown Lanes

The AMF Smithtown Lanes provides a easy to get to fun option out here for any Stony Brook student looking for a few hours of lane fun. It is located two Long Island railroad stops away approximately 10 minutes away from campus. There is currently a groupon deal going on which includes two hours of bowling and rental shoes for $19.

Stony Brook University Hospital Cafeteria

A great food hack for Seawolves sick of the typical on campus options is dining at the cafeteria in the hospital. The food there is cheaper than other places on campus and tastes better than other on campus options. They offer different breakfast, lunch and dinner options they even have late night options. If you take classes, volunteer, or intern on the east side of campus (The hospital or Health Science Center) you are eligible for a dual meal plan which allows you to use your meal points to purchase food there. It is definitely worth a try. The cafeteria is located on the main lobby floor (floor 5). The trip to the cafeteria is a little confusing the first time you get there depending on where you enter but after a few visits it’ll become second nature.

Stony Brook Greenhouse

- For a fee you can use the facilities

- You can also take classes which you are involved in the greenhouse

- Some of these plants are also used for stony events such as commencement

Bamboo Forest

- Durring the nice weather there is a hammock, now there is currently a chair

Paint a Piece

- About 25 minutes off campus

- Walk in and select a piece of unfinished pottery or make your own candle, or even do glass fusing

- Friday nights are ladies night out where there provide light snacks and dessert, you can bring your own drinks if prefered and you only pay for what you paint. Raffles are also done. Once in awhile there is chocolate ladies night out where it is “chocolate everything”

- Parties are also done where you can do canvas painting etc. (great for kids as well)

LI Pour House Bar & Grill BBQ

The LI Pour House is located on 650 NY-112, Port Jefferson Station. The highlights of the restaurant include all you can eat wing nights on Thursday for just 20$ with signature flavors like “Coconut Glaze” and “Pour House BBQ”, along with Paint Nights on the same day, pool tables conveniently places to dine and play, and live music. The most unique feature of the restaurant by far is an entire wall dedicated to a “pour your own craft beer” system with 20 options that will leave you feeling satisfied and ready to come back for more.

Se-Port Deli

The Se-port Deli is located on 301 Main St in East Setauket. The deli is a famous spot known for their huge sandwiches that will be sure to leave you satisfied all day long. One of the most unique features of the deli are the famous and interesting names they give each sandwich, from “The Seawolf”, “The Vic Ochi”, and my personal favorite “The Gasm”. Bring your cash and an empty stomach to enjoy this hometown favorite.
