We've all had that moment when the smell crayons take us back to when we were younger and we had just opened a coloring book.

We would color outside the lines and take 15 minutes just to pick out the right shade of blue to color in the sky with cotton ball clouds.

I remember when I was younger and my kindergarten teacher gave me a coloring book, or so I thought. I opened the book with excitement only to realize that it was filled with big letters and dotted blue lines.

I looked around for my crayons to color but instead my teacher placed an ugly yellow pencil right in front of me. She looked at the class and said in her teacher voice "everyone pick a hand to put your pencil in." I looked down at both of my hands..

I picked up the pencil in my right hand.

My teacher said "everyone start with the first letter and then keep going." I gripped my pencil the way she told us to and began to copy the right side of a capital "A." Then I sat back in my cold plastic blue chair.

I got frustrated. My "A" was so shaky.

My teacher saw my frustration and came over to me. She bent down with the popping of her knees and told me to never give up and that practice makes perfect.

I finished all the letters in one day. My letters started to look more like letters by the end. I was so excited to get home to show my mom.

I got on the bus with a smile on my face. Then we arrived at my stop, I got off and saw my mom waiting for me.

I handed her my workbook. She looked at all my hard work and was proud of me. She even called it "Chicken scratch," whatever that is.
