The "Palm Springs" Screenwriter Revealed How Long Nyles Had Been Stuck In The Time Loop

    Such a long time!!!

At this point, you've likely seen Palm Springs already. Otherwise, why would you click on this? So I'm going to assume you know that the movie revolves around Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) being stuck in an infinite time loop.

In the movie, Nyles says he's been stuck in the time loop for a very long time — to the point where he even forgets what his job was. But it's unclear how much time has actually passed. Is it five years? Ten? A century? Just thinking about it freaks me out!

Well, thankfully, the movie's screenwriter, Andy Siara, cleared up how long Nyles had been trapped in the time loop.

"I don’t know if I’m supposed to say exactly, but Nyles has been in there for over 40 years. There are versions of the script where — mainly when Sarah comes in — I put titles in of how much time has passed. The main thing I hope got across was that a lot of time had passed. A lifetime of memories has passed, basically," he said to Decider.

As for how long Sarah had been stuck in the time loop, another Decider piece looks into that. Its writer, Marshall Shaffer, proposed the theory that it was nearly eight years. This theory hasn't been confirmed by the cast or the screenwriter, so it's tough to say how accurate it is.

So there you have it — 40 years! That feels like an eternity, but it explains why Nyles felt so comfortable with his new reality.
