1. Title

This title is unique. It can not be mistaken for any other movie. It is easy to say and easy to recognize. The term, "Goonies"is a nickname given to the kids or people who live in the "Goon Docks" or the outcasts of the town.

2. Editing

I do admit there are some flaws but for the time, this movie is amazing. The use of green screen is daring and well done for its time. My favorite is the fact that it was chosen not to subtitle the Italian but yet you understand exactly what they are saying, which leads me to my next point.

3. Casting

This cast could not be more perfect! As I look over the cast list, no character can be replaced. From Anne Ramsey to Sean Astin to John Matuszak. Many other actors were considered for this film, but to change this cast in any way, just wouldn't be the same.

4. Directing

Richard Donner is brilliant in directing this film. For example, to catch the genuine expression of these kids at seeing the ship for the first time, they were not allowed to see the pirate ship until shooting it.

5. Cinematography

Lighting should reflect the plot, and this is achieved. It is rainy and depressing while times are rough until the end when it is sunny and happy. In the cave, it is well lit and there is a LIGHT SOURCE!

The shots in this movie are mimicked and recreated by fans from the looking up below the floorboards to behind the map. The shots are memorable and well done.

6. Set Design

The Goonies house is so wonderfully done with the amount of objects a true house with teen boys would have. And it adds to the character development to see how they truly live when they are at home.

The dusty restaurant with cobwebs, the ingenuity of the tunnels & the booty traps… I mean booby traps.

7. Wardrobe & Makeup

Chunk. Just Chunk. Floral shirt and plaid pants, perfection. Each character has their own unique look that captures their inner self. Sloth has a Superman shirt. Data and his inventions like 007. Brand in his workout gear. One Halloween, I dressed up Brand in sweats, a bandanna, and shorts over my pants. I was recognized more than I expected.

Then Sloth. His makeup and mechanics is amazing. The makeup on this film is overlooked but the intricate design of this masterpiece is stunning.

8. Sound

My inspiration, Cyndi Launper, performed the theme song, which is a plus but what I really like is the sound. Whether it's stingers, effects, or composition. From the roar of Sloth to the spoon being taken out of Chunk's mouth as he tries to get the last bit of ice-cream, the sound is impressive.

9. Writing

These are just a few of the incredible lines written for this film. As I watch this movie over and over and over again, new lines become my new favorites. Then the plot is everything I wanted. Outcast kids in desperation to save their neighborhood by risking it all on a map to treasure while out-running time, obstacles, and competition. I think so many of us feel like outcasts at one point or another and had similar challenges. Maybe not exactly the same but trying to triumph and make our lives and the lives of the ones we love better.

10. Timeless

Many people helped create this film and each person added the sparkle that made this movie timeless. In 2017, it was selected into the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, and/or aesthetically significant." Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of watching this movie in theaters when it opened. I found it on a shelf at the library, hidden away, and it felt as if, it chose me. This movie ignited my love of film & history. It will forever be my favorite movie.
