These Soy Candles Are The Perfect Chilly-Weather DIY

Bonus: They're good for the environment, too.

What you need:

1 large tin or pot (can be anything from your pantry, just be sure it’s big enough)

1 pound of soy wax

12 inches of paper core wick

3 wick tabs

1.5 ounces of essential oil of your chosing
2 or 3 glass containers

Thick gloves for protection

Scissors

Instructions:

1. If you are using a recycled tin, make sure it has been cleaned thoroughly before placing on your stove top. Put heavy duty gloves on.

2. Put heat on medium, and melt 1 pound of soy wax. Make sure to keep an eye on things as you do not want to overheat. Turn heat off once wax is nearly liquid.

3. While this is still melting, prime your paper-core wick by dipping it in the wax and removing the excess with a paper towel. This will help stiffen the wick so that it stands up straight.

4. Feed your wick through a wick tab and clamp shut with pliers or tweezers.

5. Pour in 1.5 ounces of oil. The oil can be a combination of anything you like the smell of - just be sure not to use too much oil, as this can be flammable once you light your wick. Stir well.

6. Once the wax has cooled for about 5 minutes, carefully pour it into the glass containers. (If you begin to see bubbles or a cloudy layer forming in the of wax, this means it is too cold and will form cracks once it is set in the jars. If this happens, reheat the wax.)

7. Keep an eye on the setting wax and when it begins to look cloudy, slowly begin feeding the wick (attached to wick tab) through the middle of the wax. This should stand up straight on its own, but if not, place a pencil or chopstick across the circumference of the jar to help keep it upright

8. Once your wax is fully set, trim your wick down to just under 1 centimeter or 0.3 inches.

9. Decorate your jars for birthdays, weddings, events, or for home!
