6 Reasons Paul Feig Might Be The Coolest Guy In Hollywood

If you weren’t familiar with the always-dressed-to-kill, bundle of creative energy that is Paul Feig, here are six reasons you need to hop on the Feig Fan Train ASAP….

1. He created Freaks and Geeks.

Despite its short-lived run of 18 episodes, the 1999 TV series was created and produced by Feig in conjunction with his longtime friend, Judd Apatow, whom he brought on as an executive producer, writer, and director. The series, loosely based on Feig’s own traumatic experience as a high schooler at Chippewa Valley High School in Michigan, quickly became a cult-classic and essentially defined the 1980’s for millennials. With the show available for streaming on Netflix, teens and adults alike are still finding the series and its cast of angsty high school “freaks” and “geeks” pretty relatable. The show was also instrumental in launching the careers of its young stars including James Franco, Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, Samm Levine, and Jason Segel.

2. He was a standup comedian for several years.

Feig got his start in standup at age 15 performing at a biker bar in Detroit, MI, called The Delta Lady. During the ‘80s and ‘90s, before Freaks and Geeks, Feig performed standup and appeared on sitcoms such as The Louie Show, The Drew Carey Show, and Roseanne. In one of his most popular standup sets, Feig played the role of a totally humorless high school wood-shop teacher named Willard Schmidt.

3. His fashion game is TOP SHELF.

Go to any Red Carpet event where Paul Feig is in attendance, and the guy can instantly be spotted in a crowd wearing a dapper three-piece suit, always paired with a brightly colored pocket silk. In fact, Feig’s menswear game is so on point, he even designed a signature line for J.Crew that reflects his passion for pairing traditional accents with bold patterns and bright colors. The Paul Feig™ for J.Crew collection launched this past November, and features lapel suit jackets, pants, vests, dress shirts, ties, cuff links, and four different pocket silks. 50 percent of profits from the sales of the pocket silks is donated to STOMP Out Bullying, a national anti-bullying organization for kids and teens in the U.S. According to Feig, “bullies suck but pocket silks RULE.”

4. He fervently supports women.

Throughout his career, Feig has been an outspoken advocate for women in entertainment. In 2013, he wrote a rip-roaring guest column in support of female comedy for The Hollywood Reporter, titled “Why Men Aren’t Funny.” The article was a rebuttal to the late Christopher Hitchens’ 2007 essay “Why Women Aren’t Funny.” Additionally, several of the films Feig has directed feature women-centered storylines and lead characters. His 2016 “Ghostbusters” remake featured an all-female cast of ghost-busting heroes, including Hollywood funny queens Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon. Recently, it was announced that Feig is directing and producing a female tech entrepreneur comedy series in development at Freeform.

5. His relationship with his wife is so cool.

Feig wouldn’t be Feig without the support of his wife of 23 years, Laurie Karon. Laurie was originally Feig’s manager, a role which eventually morphed into girlfriend, and well, the rest is history! The dynamic husband-wife duo are both active on Instagram and it’s fun to read Laurie’s hilarious comments on Feig’s posts.
