1. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, narrated by Wil Wheaton

Audible

"I’ve been an audiobook junkie since I discovered Overdrive and had long drives to work. Ready Player One is the best one I’ve listened to: It kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. It takes talent to write a whole story that is essentially people playing a video game, and Wheaton’s voice is perfect for the story."

8. Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian, narrated by Ric Jerrom

Audible

"It's very nicely read by Ric Jerrom and it whisper-syncs with your Kindle so you can switch between reading and audiobook easily. The book itself (and the whole Aubrey/Maturin series which it kicks off) is wonderfully evocative of the Napoleonic war at sea."

9. As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride, written and narrated by Cary Elwes

Audible

"This is a must read/listen if you enjoyed the film. I suggest getting the audiobook, purely because of Elwes' imitations. He also just has a wonderful reading voice, it's just nice listening to him. Has an overall sweet and genuine tone. I absolutely loved it."

18. Skin Game: The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, narrated by James Marsters

Audible

"If you’re a fan of mystery and fantasy novels, look no further. Harry Dresden is a private investigator, and the only practicing wizard in Chicago. He’s got a mouth, a wizard’s staff, and an inability to let bad guys wreak havoc in his town. Not only that, but the whole book is narrated by James Marsters (aka Spike from Buffy), and he really brings Butcher’s character to life. There are 15 books so far, with several more to come."

19. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, narrated by Simon Prebble

Audible

"Hands down the most accomplished audio book I have heard in the past 15 years. Not only is the novel a massive achievement — Dickens meets Gaiman meets Jane Austen meets Tolkien — but Simon Prebble’s narration including his 50+ voices makes for a masterful performance."

20. Born A Crime, written and narrated by Trevor Noah

Audible

"Not knowing too much about the current run of The Daily Show or Trevor Noah’s comedy in general didn’t stop me from completely loving this audiobook. His growing up during South Africa’s apartheid certainly gives a very unique, engaging perspective, but ultimately his stories are told with a lot of gumption, humor, and empathy. He tries to make sense of a system that never made sense at all. Ultimately, this audiobook has great stories, but his performance narrating is what carries it above and beyond."

22. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, narrated by Davina Porter

Audible

"The story itself is amazing. It is about a WWII nurse who is accidentally thrown back in time 200 years in Scotland. It’s read by Davina Porter, who is ridiculously talented. Her character voices and emotion really bring the story to life."
