I Can Guess Your Favorite Genre Based Off How You Build Your Love Interest

Ok, first things first: what are they wearing when you see them?

What is their profession?

Where do you first meet them?

Time for a ball! Pick a dress for one of you to wear

Dancing late into the night means a midnight meal! What are they ordering? 

You give them DJ control in the car. They turn on....

Time to meet the parents! Where did they grow up?

Lastly, and most importantly, what do they smell like?

You like character-driven stories with hard-hitting subject matters and endings that are bittersweet. You always read next to a box of tissues because you never know when your feels are going to be activated, and the blurbs that mention a small town secret give you chills. Contemporary

Space both terrifies and exhilarates you, and you would totally be an astronaut if astronauts didn't miss out on so many new releases while floating around out there. When aliens come to pay us a visit (and it's totally going to happen) you will be first in line to return with them to their home planet. So if you haven't read Skyward by Brandon Sanderson yet, ET phone home.

Science Fiction

Nelly was right: it's getting hot in here 🔥 Who needs an IRL love interest when you can have endless fictional ones? They can be anything from bush pilots to pro hockey players to the neighbor you haven't talked to much but who is really, really hot. If you haven't read The Simple Wild by KA Tucker yet, you are depriving yourself.

Romance

Complicated politics, long books with at least 4 more to come in the series, complex magic systems. Are you getting excited yet? Fantasy is the best genre out there, true, but it also comes in so many shapes and sizes. If you want a new superhero series definitely check out Renegades by Marissa Meyer, or snatch up Vampire Academy for an old favorite featuring hot vampires and endless plot twists.

Fantasy

Did you also grow up reading Nancy Drew books to the point where you dreamed you were actually Nancy? Just me? The twists start coming and they don't stop coming when you pick up a Riley Sager book, but if you're more into teen thrillers Gretchen McNeil's Get Even just got turned into a Netflix series (plus she has an excellent backlist)!

Mystery Thriller

You were definitely born in the wrong decade, so it makes perfect sense that you spend all your spare time reading about those other time periods you definitely would like better. Facts mixed with fiction is the best duo out there! Read Lovely War by Julie Berry for a twist on WWI and WWII--some familiar Greek gods narrate the tragedies.
