If you're a person who wears make-up, there's a 99.9% chance that at one time or another, you've tried out the spraying hairspray on your face to stop your make-up smudging trick. Then setting sprays came along, claiming to do the same job but without burning your eyes or making your entire face stick. But are they worth it – and what exactly does your setting spray do that a good primer-and-powder sandwich can't?

1. Hydrate your skin

The number one job of a setting spray is to fix your make-up in place but many also claim to hydrate in the process. Most sprays list water as an ingredient, as well as specific chemicals to boost hydration to keep you going through the day. If you've got an oily complexion, this may not be ideal.

2. Dry out your skin

Other setting sprays go for a more "matte" finish and will often dry your skin out in the process. Dehydrated skin is prone to blemishes or dry patches, and by the end of the day, your face may not be feeling quite so fresh.
