Suicide has always been a sensitive and controversial topic of discussion. With the recent debut of Netflix's original series 13 Reasons Why, there has been a notable increase of public discussion on suicide.
Musical artist Logic, also known as Larry David, is joining the conversation with help from Alessia Clara and DJ Khaled with his song 1-800-273-8255. If the song title confuses you, it is the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL), who Logic partnered with for this single from his latest album, Everybody.
1-800-273-8255 is the third single released ahead of his latest album and details an example of someone in a suicide crisis and their conversation with a Lifeline crisis counselor. "Plain and simply: they are ready to commit suicide" explains Logic in his album's booklet. The rest of the song plays out with the counselor giving reasons why life is worth fighting for and finally the caller expressing a new outlook on living.
In an interview with Genius, Logic explains the connections he's made with fans on tour that lead to the epiphany that motivated him. "It’s beyond just this song. It’s the whole album. What can happen if I took myself out of my comfort zone and made a whole album about everybody and everybody’s struggles," said Logic.
Alongside1-800-273-8255, the NSPL also released four psa montages featuring fans expressing how Logic's music and the hotline have helped them in their own personal lives. In a press release from the NSPL they detail that "for every person who dies by suicide, there are 278 individuals annually who think seriously about suicide but do not die. These untold stories can change lives." For more information about the Lifeline, visit suicidepreventionlifeline.org
