Which Student Volunteering Week Activity Should You Do?

Pick your favourite place to spend time in Durham

**Give it a Go at Thurston**_Friday 23rd Feb, 6pm-8:30pm at Bowburn Youth Centre_ 
The Thurston Drama Project runs evening performing arts activities for children aged 6-16 years old to give them the opportunity to engage in drama and the arts when they may not get the chance to do so elsewhere. Contact Ben and Charlotte on thurston.sca@durham.ac.uk to let the fun commence!

The theatre session

**Auckland Castle Conservation**_Tuesday 20th Feb, 9:30am-4pm at Maiden Castle._
Want to spend the day doing conservation work in the amazing setting of Auckland Castle, which has hosted many English Kings and Queens for 1,500 years? Due to limited places, please email Hannah at community.action@durham.ac.uk to book your place!
**Beyond Boundaries**_Wednesday 21st Feb, 11am – 4pm from Maiden Castle._ 
Beyond Boundaries is set at a beautiful farm in the North Yorkshire Moors. The farm works with children and adults who have learning difficulties, boosting their confidence through regular social interaction. We are having a special party to celebrate. Please email Hannah on community.action@durham.ac.uk and get your party hat at the ready!

The outdoorsy sessions

**DISC Olympics Sports Day**_Friday 23rd Feb, 10:30am-3pm._ Transport is provided. SCA has set up a new partnership with DISC who work with adults with disabilities. We will be running an Olympic-themed Sports Day at the centre in Pelton. From athletics to volleyball and archery to new age kurling, there will be plenty of fun activities to get involved in! **Durham Mums on the Run** 
Monday 19th Feb,
9.30am-10.30am at Maiden Castle
The mums on the run project aims to encourage mothers of all fitness levels and ability to start running and improve their overall fitness and running skills.

 **Active Steps**
Tuesday 20th Feb
Boxing (11am-12noon), Multi-sports (12pm-1pm) – Both at East Gym, Hild Bede College.
An activity based project focusing upon groups which might not prioritise physical activity within their daily routine. Contact Lynn on lynn.preston@durham.ac.uk to find out more.

The sporty sessions

**Give it a Go at English Corner**_Wednesday 21st Feb, 7pm-8pm in PCL050 (The Law School)_ 
Have fun at English Corner, a place for international students to meet up with fluent English-speaking volunteers to learn about one another’s cultures whilst improving their confidence in speaking English. Contact Chris on englishcorner.sca@durham.ac.uk to get involved. 
**Give it a go at GOALs**_Tuesday 20th Feb 7pm-9pm_
GOALs (Go Out And Live) is an initiative which runs weekly informal sessions involving activities and trips for young adults with learning difficulties from the local area. To get involved with the Give it a Go session, email Jack and Joshua at goals.sca@durham.ac.uk.

The social sessions

**Give it a Go at Free Cakes for Kids**_Wednesday 21st Feb_
Our project Free Cakes for Kids is running a bake sale in the Palatine Centre! If you want to bake cakes to sell, help on the stall on the day, or even just want a piece of cake between lectures come along! Message Celeste and Hannah on cakesforkids.sca@durham.ac.uk. 
**Tea Parties**_Wednesday 21st Feb, 2pm-4pm, St Oswald’s Church Hall._ 
You are warmly invited for a cup of tea, cake and a chat with some of Durham’s residents aged over 55. With free tea, cake and entertainment from a traditional folk band and swing dancing society; what more could you ask for? Email teaparties.sca@durham.ac.uk to get involved.

The sessions for food lovers

**Give it a go at Riding for the Disabled**_Saturday 24th Feb and Sunday 25th Feb, 12(noon)-4pm at Washington Stables. Transport it provided._ 
The RDA project runs a weekly trip to Washington Riding Centre, a local specialist centre which provides therapeutic lessons for disabled riders. Our activities include feeding, grooming and leading the horses in lessons. As a special SVW treat, the centre have offered us 14 spaces on both Saturday and Sunday for our students to get some air, escape the Durham Bubble, and to try something new! The sessions for animal lovers

**Computeas**_Wednesday 21st Feb 2pm-3:30pm at Clayport Library_ 
We help older people in Durham to learn basic computer and internet skills in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Email computeas.sca@durham.ac.uk to find out more. 
**Cyber Champions**_Wednesday 21st Feb_
Cyber Champions delivers digital literacy and e-safety workshops in local secondary schools. To make sure you are trained in time, please let Elouise know by the 15th Feb if you are interested in getting involved. Contact Eloise at cyberchampions.sca@durham.ac.uk.

**Scholars into Schools**_Wednesday 21st Feb, 1pm-3pm._  
Interested in talking to children about your country and culture? If so, then please contact Rebecca on scholars.sca@durham.ac.uk. 
**Keenan House Homework Club**_Thursday 22nd Feb, 5pm-7pm at Keenan House, Ustinov College_ 
A great opportunity to help primary school children, many of whom are not native speakers of English, with their schoolwork as well as supervising a variety of recreational activities in Keenan House. Contact Amy on keenan.sca@durham.ac.uk to get involved!
