1. Start Packing Early

Say what? A true boss would never leave the packing for the last minute, and neither should you. Start packing early so you can work at your own pace and have plenty of time to run to the store for more boxes and tape. Because yes, you will inevitably run out.

2. Don’t Forget to Label Boxes

Replace “turtles” with “coffee maker” or “favorite shoes” or literally any of your other possessions, and this will be you after opening the 12th unlabeled box and still not finding what you’re looking for. Do yourself a favor: Be a boss and label boxes in advance—maybe with a label maker if you’re feeling extra ambitious!

3. Skip the Rental Truck

You might think you’ll save money by renting a truck and moving yourself, but are you accounting for the medical bills when you throw out your back lifting the sofa? Or all the thank you pizza you buy your friends when they inevitably have to help? Be a boss and rent a portable container instead. Pack and unpack at your own pace, and have your stuff picked up and dropped off right at your new location.

4. Pack Snacks

Honestly, packing snacks is always a boss move, but moving day is no exception. When your stomach starts growling halfway through the drive across town, or as soon as you get into your unpacking groove, the last thing you want is to drop everything and hunt for a restaurant in a new neighborhood. Pack some snacks to keep you going—probably something less messy than ice cream, though.

5. Clean the New House First

This will be your face if you’re trying to move in and keep running into the old resident’s dirt and grime. You can’t always get into your new place ahead of time, but if you can, be a boss and clean at least the kitchen and bathrooms.

If you’re moving with pets, remember, they might find all the changes just as stressful as you do. Help them adjust by keeping their routine consistent. You should also put beds, food bowls, and litter boxes in similar places to where they were in your old house. This will help your furry friends find their way around and get comfortable in their new home.

7. Measure Everything

Skip the heartbreak by measuring your old furniture and your new rooms before moving day. Then you’ll have plenty of time to find a new sofa that fits, and say a proper goodbye to your old one.

8. Make a Plan for De-stressing
