I don't have anything personal against this song. It's just not, in my opinion, the strongest song on folklore. The chorus is a little bland, and the verses aren't much better. The bridge adds some points, though. Overall, it's an interesting song, but not the best on the album

So this is where it gets a bit controversial. If you ask anyone, I bet this song would be in their top ten favorite folklore songs. I considered putting this higher, but as I listened to the album more, this became a bit of a skip for me. It's still a heartwrenching song about a friend who lived in an abusive household. I find myself crying to it more than I should.

As a hoax defender, I was disappointed to figure out that this song isn't as high in my ranking as I thought it would be. Again, it's a beautiful, sad song, but it's not as good as songs like "august" and "the 1". Still, whenever this song pops up on my phone, I never skip it!

14: exile (ft. Bon Iver)

Another controversial take. This song is really pretty, which is why it makes me so sad to put it up here. But the truth is, this song doesn't do much for me. Taylor and Bon Iver's' voices blend so well together, maybe even a little too well; I only listen to this song when I'm in the mood for something soothing and flowing like that. The song itself tells the story of two lovers broken apart by the same problems that haunt them even now, and missing what they had so much but knowing they could never be together. Again, it depends what mood I'm in.

I'll admit, when folklore first released, this was my favorite song. It's so deep, if you think about it, but it portrays it's meaning in a mix of metaphors and sophisticated language. Everytime I listen to it, I make connections I haven't made before, but it can get a bit repetitive at times.

This has to be one of the saddest songs in existence. It's a tribute to the death, and pain, and suffering that so many people experience each day. It's haunting and beautiful and everytime I hear it, I feel like sobbing my eyes out—which is why I can't listen to it too much.

Taylor needs an award for how relatable this is. It's about never being enough, no matter how hard you try—story of our lives, right? It's such a great song to listen to, and it lets you know you're not alone in your struggles.

"But I'm a fire, and I'll keep your brittle heart warm, If your cascade ocean wave blues come. All these people think love's for show, But I would die for you in secret." Oh my gosh, this line slaps every time. I love this song so much, which is why it had to be in the top ten.

This song is so sweet! It's really fun to sing along to, and whenever I hear it, it instantly puts me in a good mood. It's the type of song you'd want to listen to all the time if you were in a longterm relationship.

Who else is completely invested in the folklore love triangle? This song has a bit of a twang to it that reminds me of old Taylor, all while capturing the maturity of new Taylor. This song is almost a masterpiece, telling you a whole story in a matter of minutes. I wish I could rank it higher, but out of all the love triangle songs (betty, cardigan, august) this is, in my opinion, the weakest.

Again, another love triangle song! Cardigan may be the only single from folklore, but it does it's job REALLY well—it sets the tone for folklore and is a lyrical rollercoaster. By the time this song is over, you'll find yourself rooting for the protagonist and her lover. I love this song so much!

"Take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die..." That line is always so haunting! I know I've said this a lot before, but I'll say it again—I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG! It could've easily been a single, or at least made it on the main album—but hey, at least she released this in the deluxe edition! I don't know what I'd do without this song.

5: the last great american dynasty

This song is so overrated! Everytime I've read a folklore ranking, this song usually ranks so low. I love this song! It's an adorable tribute to Rebekkah Harness, the former owner of Taylor's Rhode Island.

4: illicit affairs

This is one of the most underrated Taylor Swift songs ever. The main reason this song ranks so high in my list is because of THE BRIDGE. "Don't call me kid, don't call me baby, look at this godforsaken mess that you made me." The amount of money I'd pay to hear her sing this live is terrifying.

3: the 1

I'll admit, when this song first came out, I didn't like it very much. It felt very campy and repetitive—but now it's become one of my favorite Taylor songs of all time! This is definitely her best Track 1, no question. It's a sonic and lyrical masterpiece.

And here we have our final love triangle song! August is beautiful. I don't know what else to say. It's amazing, and I'd listen to this all day, on repeat, for as long as I could.

And for number one, we have. . .my tears ricochet! This is the strongest, lyrically, sonically, and emotionally, song on folklore. And this is for sure one of Taylor's best songs ever! I could write an essay on how beautiful this song is, but for the sake of the article, I won't. All I'll say is: my tears ricochet is a masterpiece.
