The South Devon Players Theatre Company, Brixham

The South Devon Players are an award winning, small, family-friendly, completely non-profit, community theatre / amateur dramatic group based in the beautiful fishing port of Brixham; Devon (in South West England) and we perform theatre shows around Torbay, and South Devon, based on historical events. Founded in 2005 with the proceeds of a car-boot sale, and winning the Torbay Together Arts In the Community award in 2010, the vast majority of our shows and projects are about local history and mythology of the South West, and are written by local authors. It is part of our ethos to promote the history of Brixham, Torbay and South Devon. We sometimes deviate to perform plays based on classical stories or other wider historical events, but our main focus is, and will always be, the history of the Southwest. Previous shows have included the story of a 17th Century vicar in Totnes who became embroiled in a comic scandal (Reverend John Prince), the story of one of Brixham’s most famous smugglers; Resurrection Bob, the adventures of a notorious Devon highwayman “Old Mobb” during the arrival of William of Orange in the county, the Great Gale of Brixham, which took place in 1866 and greatly affected the town to this day, and many more local stories, the list of which grows each year. Shows are performed in community venues – church halls, and community centres, in order to be able to keep ticket prices affordable for everyone, and bring theatrical experience to a wider audience. Occasionally we will perform street theatre shows as well, such street shows usually to support other local non-profit events or entertainment groups working within the community. New members are always welcomed regardless of their background, experience, beliefs or nationality; Anyone aged over 16 is welcome to join and while we are not a “youth theatre group” younger people are welcome to join with the written permission of a parent. We aim to provide an exciting hobby, performance experience and education, and a friendly, safe, inclusive team atmosphere. The team ranges from experienced performers, through to beginners, all of whom work very hard, side by side, to create new productions. We also provide links to possible peformers for local film and TV projects, whose casting agencies approach us with information on local castings – our biggest group TV credit currently being the BBC, and Disney’s casting agents having approached us (and cast two members as extras/ walk ons as a result) in thier Alice In Wonderland feature film. What do we stand for? - Community involvement - Accessible performances - Local heritage - Skills building and teamwork - Creative expression - The joy of creative performance You can find out more about the group, our latest news and what we are doing, from our main website http://southdevonplayers.weebly.com
