Multiple Women Were Sent Rape Threats After Responding To A Sexist Matrimonial Ad

"Initially, I ignored it. But, I couldn't stand the shit that was written in the ad."

Earlier this week, this matrimonial ad was published in The Hindu.

Being heavily casteist, sexist, ageist and classist, the particularly specific requirement of "a non-feminist woman below the age of 26" caught the eye of many people online.

A woman who saw her friend post about the ad, decided to respond to it to question its sexism.

The man assumed to be behind the ad replied to her with rape and death threats. (Trigger Warning – rape, death threats)

Two other women who also sent in their responses received these threatening emails in return.

Over the next two days, The Hindu responded to the backlash with this addendum in their paper.

This is what their response reads:

Disclaimer: Readers are requested to verify and make appropriate enquiries to satisfy themselves about the veracity of an advertisement before responding to any published in this newspaper. THG Publishing Pvt. Ltd., the Publisher and Owner of this newspaper, does not vouch for the authenticity of any advertisement or advertiser of for any of the advertiser's products and/or services. "Initially, I ignored it. But, I couldn't stand the shit that was written in the ad. It is also problematic that The Hindu didn't verify the identity of the person advertising before publishing it as well," she told BuzzFeed.

As far as complaints are concerned, she is considering filing a case with the Cyber Crime Cell. "I have filed FIRs before and I haven't had a good experience with them. But we are still trying to report to the Cyber Crime Cell as anonymously as possible," she added.

BuzzFeed has reached out to the advertiser and The Hindu for comment.
