A Mumbai Pub Was Made To Apologise After An FIR Was Filed Against Its "Blasphemous" Interiors

The incident has left the internet divided on the limits of freedom of speech and institutional bullying.

The Watchdog Foundation, a group supporting Christian interests, recently filed an FIR against popular pub Goregaon Social alleging that its interiors were "blasphemous".

The venue used to be surrounded by satirical images of religious figures, such as Jesus Christ holding a leather bag and Moses holding a tablet PC.

Following the FIR, the pub also came under fire from the Archdiocese of Bombay, which demanded that its licences be revoked until the images were taken down.

Online petitions also started demanding action against the owners.

A lot of people sided with the owners once news broke, claiming that an FIR was too harsh a response.

However, there was also considerable support for the petitioners.

On Wednesday night, Social Offline's CEO Riyaz Amlani bowed to the pressure and issued an apology on Facebook, stating that all the offensive images had been taken down.

The Archdiocese responded by accepting the apology, but also said that they will continue to monitor the situation to ensure no further religious sentiments were hurt.

Coming soon after the Karan Johar-MNS controversy, this incident has sparked further debate about the limits of freedom of speech and institutional bullying.
