1. Wait to see which textbooks you really need to buy & check online for cheaper prices

It is always smart to wait until your first class to see what materials you really need for the course. If you do need a textbook, check Amazon and online first for cheaper prices. Some books are only available at the bookstore, but you can rent textbooks instead of buying them to save some money!

2. Download the CATA app but DO NOT rely on the buses if you are in a hurry

While the CATA buses are great if it is raining, snowing, or you just don’t feel like walking, they are not always reliable! Buses can take longer than expected, be so crowded you can’t get on, or you can miss them. It is best to not rely on the bus if you have an important event to make or you are late.

3. Go to the Involvement Fair

The involvement fair is in the HUB at the beginning of the semester and has a great display of Penn State’s clubs and organizations. Go and walk around and see if anything interests you. It’s a great way to get involved early in what you are interested in or just try some new things out! After all, there are 1,035 student organizations.

4. Get to know your professors & do not be afraid to ask them for help

Attending your professors office hours is a great way to understand the materials more and also have a great relationship with the professor. Putting in that extra time could be the difference in grade and can help give you more insight into a major that you may be interested in. Periodically check in or make it a habit, forming that relationship is a great way to use all of your resources.

5. Always carry an umbrella - trust us!

The weather can say clear skies and sunshine and you could still be soaked by noon. Having an umbrella in your backpack at all times can save you from being drenched by the random and sometimes terrible rain we get here in Happy Valley.

6. Save money by not eating at the HUB everyday

While the HUB has many yummy food choices, these meals are expensive and can drain your meal points before you know it. Treat yourself, but watch how much you’re spending. Also, take advantage of college discounts - Hulu, Spotify, Amazon, Apple Music, Unidays. Congrats! You’re now a broke college student. But having a college ID will earn you some sweet discounts at some of your favorite stores.

7. Plan your study abroad trip early

Studying abroad is a wonderful opportunity that many Smeal students take advantage of - and you can too! If this interests you, make sure you meet with an advisor to plan ahead. The education abroad advisors will tell you everything that you need to know and how to prepare.

8. Find a buddy in every class - you can always use a study buddy

Studying can be long and daunting, but it can be more effective and fun with a buddy. Plus, if you miss a class, some professors do not post notes, and a buddy can help to show you what you missed.

9. Workout at the gym or take a fitness class- the are FREE!

Now that the gym membership is included, there is nothing holding you back from achieving your fitness goals or trying a new fitness class! There are three gyms on campus to choose from and many fitness classes to try to keep you healthy all year long.
