15 Things Women Would Say To Their Younger Selves

Research shows that half of the women in the world have given up on their childhood dreams. Here's what some women would say to their younger selves.

1. On dreaming big:

You have big dreams, and those are great, because you'll achieve them. Never settle for anything less than the extraordinary, and never, ever listen to anyone who says you can't do something. Your quirks make you you, and they'll take you far. Also, it's OK to cry when people make fun of you, but know that you'll get the last laugh when you're grown up and see what they've become.

—Ashley C.

2. On "boy" hobbies:

If you want to play football and dress like a tomboy, that is totally fine. And don't worry if you choose to play with the boys during playtime instead of sitting to chat with the girls – maybe one day you'll end up being a sports writer for a well-known newspaper, and your football-loving dad is going to be really proud of you. ;)

—Leslie R.

3. On crushes:

That fuzzy warm feeling you got whenever you saw your female PE teacher? Yeah, there is a huge reason for that. Don't be scared: Everything will be OK, and your family will love you no matter what. Gran will also out you to everyone because she's so proud.

—Antonia H.

4. On body image:

As you grow up in the next few years, you're going to get a lot of signals that you should hate your body, and that eating food that makes you feel full and happy is a thing to be avoided. Remember that your body has carried you through these 10 years with strength and grace – it's helped you run faster than anyone in your class and dance around your living room and swim for hours on end every summer. Remember that your body is a thing to love and treasure!

—Jana P.

5. On mums:

You're going to find this hard to believe, but, most of the time, Mum is actually right.

—Natalie C.

6. On having goals:

Ignore or fight back against the people who try to tell you how to behave and what your goals should be. It's not "selfish" to be independent and go after what you want, and you're not failing if you don't live up to someone else's ideal.

Don't try to tailor your wants and dreams to those of other people, because you'll be miserable. Your life is for one person: you.

—Ayesha M.

7. On "teasing":

"He just likes you" is not an excuse for boys to bully you. Don't let teachers or peers convince you that these kinds of actions are appropriate signs of affection or flirtation. Your voice is a powerful tool; use it to advocate for yourself and other girls around you!

—Megan K.

8. On business advice:

You're gay. Also, buy Google stock.

—Emily C.

9. On personal success:

Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Comparison only steals from us and from others – it either makes us feel inadequate or conceited. Just be yourself. Live and let live. There's no one else like you on the planet, so embrace your own energy, quirks, and preferences, and celebrate everyone else's.

—Alicia H.

10. On following your heart:

Don't settle just because you think it's what you deserve. You always deserve more. Always listen to your heart, and if you're not happy, make a change.

—Tara P.

11. On confidence:

Soon you won't be the big fish in a small pond. Keep acting like you are, though, because a lot of people are going to make you feel tiny.

—Priya M.

12. On being shy:

It's OK that you're shy in groups and terrified of talking to boys. You'll get more comfortable socially as you get older. You'll start to have fun at parties, and you will go on dates. You don't need to worry about that stuff now! Enjoy being quiet. You'll come to realise being an introvert is kind of the best.

—Victoria G.

13. On imperfections:

You are beautiful – believe it. Your little imperfections that you think everyone else are aware of? Newsflash: They're not. Your imperfections are somebody else's ideal of perfection, so go out and celebrate every part of your quirkiness. It's what makes you special and interesting.

—Abbie W.

14. On making decisions:

Look at your doubts as a strength rather than a weakness. Don't let them overcome you. Eventually, they'll help you feel more confident in your decisions, because you'll have taken the time to question your choices.

—Jackie M.

15. On what others think:

If you want to be weird, be weird. If you're not happy, do what makes you happy. The rest of your life, you'll cross paths with people who are unhappy, and they will try to make themselves feel better about their own shortcomings by making you feel terribly about your own. You'll realise how confident and happy you can be when you let go of worrying about what other people think of you.
