Insidious (2010) – Directed by James Wan

Insidious is a series of American horror films based on true events where all of the story plots are depicted as case files of real life demonologists. The first movie surrounds a family and having moved into their new home, their son ends up in a state of comatose, becoming a vessel for spirits to communicate and haunt those living in the house. The spirits are continuously haunting them and are yearning to take lives. A psychic is called to the house and things take a turn for the worse.

Fact: The director (James Wan) decided to direct the film to prove that he was capable of working on more than just gory ones such as the ‘Saw’ series. Insidious was an answer to anyone that wouldn’t work with him. The film featured no swearing and very little blood as opposed to Saw, which featured no shortage of the latter.

Paranormal Activity (2007) - Directed by Oren Peli

Originally a low budget flick shown at film festivals, the movie focuses on a couple that are haunted by a paranormal presence in their home. They decide to set up cameras everywhere in the house to capture footage of the supernatural goings-on in an attempt to see what is terrifying them. A psychic is hired and it is revealed that Katie is being haunted by a demon intent on making her and her partner suffer and is feeding off the negativity surrounding the household.

Fact: Much of the acting for Paranormal Activity was improvised and the actors were only told how to act and what to discuss in their movie scenes.

Conjuring 2 (2016) – Directed by James Wan

Based on a true story, The Conjuring 2 is set in Enfield, London (1977), where the Hodgsons start to notice some strange occurrences happening in their family home. Janet, the youngest daughter of the family begins to start sleepwalking and acting very strangely. The whole family witness paranormal events right in front of them and the strange occurrences make their way into the newspapers. A well renowned couple of demonologists decide reluctantly to travel to London from the United States to rid the family of the terrifying demon.

Fact: The success of Conjuring 2 has led to the antagonist demon from the movie being so famous that a spin-off movie is currently in the making called ‘The Nun’.

The Ring (2002) – Directed by Gore Verbinski

Seven days to live! A remake of the 1998 Japanese horror movie, which evidently was based on a novel written by Koji Suzuki. Having already caused a considerable amount of deaths, the Ring focuses on a reporter (Rachel Keller) in which she begins investigating a video tape that kills anybody 7 days after viewing it (but not before scaring the c**p out of them). There is an urban legend about the video and if that legend is true, Rachel has seven days to save her and her sons life.

Fact: The director of The Ring first saw his creation on a poor quality VHS tape, which added to the story’s creepy atmosphere.

The Exorcist (1973) – Directed by William Friedkin

No Exorcist film lives up to the original! Inspired by true events in 1949, a 12-year-old girl becomes possessed and her mother, an actress visiting Washington DC attempts to rid her of her demon with the help of 2 priests. In the meantime, a young priest is struggling to accept his faith whilst dealing with the terminal illness of his mother and soon finds himself embroiled in the demonic situation.

Fact: Interestingly, many extraordinary things happened during filming such as the film set in Washington DC mysteriously catching fire, at least 9 people connected to the film passing away, a serious spinal injury to one of the lead actors (Ellen Burstyn) and an 8ft long cross and over 400 years old being struck by lightning and falling to the ground in the plaza where the film premier was being shown. Seems like this movie was cursed from the start...

Blair Witch Project (1999) – Directed by Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez

After deciding to explore the Black Hills in Maryland (USA) in 1994, three student film-makers disappear leaving only their video camera and sound equipment behind. The equipment is discovered a year later and the footage recovered is the film that is being viewed. The film has a sense of realism about it and at times, keeps you on your toes. Filmed in black and white, you don’t know what’s going to happen until it’s too late.

Fact: The Blair Witch was filmed in 8 days and took 8 months to edit, with an initial budget of $20-25k to shoot.

Drag me to Hell (2009) – Directed by Sam Raimi

A loan officer is hoping for promotion to an assistant manager at the bank and to prove she is capable to her boss she needs to prove she can make difficult decisions and opts to withdraw an extension to a Romani lady’s mortgage payments. A retaliation ensues and the woman places a curse on the officer that after suffering 3 days of anguish and misery, she will be sent to the pits of hell where she will burn for eternity.

Fact: Alison Lohman (the movie protagonist) told ‘The Daily Record’ newspaper that she "had to have tequila shots every night just to get to sleep."
