The Background

Derry Girls is a comedy that began airing on the United Kingdom's Channel 4 about a year and a half ago. Following the life of (mostly) Catholic teenage girls Erin, her cousin Orla, Clare, Michelle, and her English cousin James. While a politically and religiously divided city, Derry (sorry not sorry), tries to function normally. The show follows the basic views of the war, familial views, and Irish culture, with a humorous twist. The first season focused more so on the assimilation and culture of Ireland and Catholic private at the hands of pressure. The second focuses more so on acceptance; of the 'enemy side', of each other, and mischief they cause.

S2E02 - Ms. De Brún and the Child of Prague

This episode fades right in from the first one of the season. After an overnight getaway to find the commonalities of Catholic girls and Protestant boys. The girls of Our Lady Immaculate are gifted with a Child Of Prague statuette from their friends across the border. Along with an exchange of gifts between the two schools, there is a trade between two teachers. Originally expecting a hot lad from the Protestant all-boys school, instead, a (still hot) woman joins the team. While assimilating into her new environment, she teaches them about individuality in a sense that is more relatable. Especially for Erin and James, the student's self-esteem and love for learning skyrockets. After a one week trial that leaves the underdogs feeling empowered, and the goodie two shoes' questioned themselves. Ms. De Brún gets a little too close for comfort when the gang is invited to her house for wine. Suddenly their new, badass heroine has left Our Lady Immaculate. It is quickly assumed that she has left due to religious tensions, and the girls. Sidenote - yes, James is a Derry Girl, further explanation later. Quickly, the five jump into action to devise a plan to blackmail Sister Michael, take The Child Of Prague hostage and leave a ransom note demanding Ms. De Brún's return. Crazily planned out, and an even wilder execution, the kids end up decapitating the figurine. Our once-heroes are soon caught for all their crimes by the school, and now they've got the family involved. During a meeting between Mary, Aunt Sarah, Michelle's Mom and Clare's as well with Sister Michael. It is then the kids discover that Ms. De Brun was "let go" when she accepted a position at a school offering a higher salary.

S2E06 - The President

This episode will make you sad AND happy cry. The talk of the town is President Bill Clinton's appearance in Derry after "settled" tensions between Catholics and Protestants. This can only be matched by the dramatic return of James' mother to Derry. After sending James to Derry from London, she has come to reclaim him back. The whole friend group and family begin to get suspicious when James is seemingly getting taken advantage of by his mother. Having some beef with many of the girls of Derry's past, except for her eyebrows, great shape, Kathy is leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouths except her enamored son. As the day to Clinton's arrival draws near, everyone starts to have their ludicrous reactions. First Sister Michael, who will not cancel class despite this historic day. Next is Granda Joe, who is convinced he can find Clinton via radio waves. And James, who drop a figurative bomb the Derry. After the four girls decide playing hooking is better following the rules, not too much convincing here, they begin to make their way to Clinton's first come first serve barricaded speech. It is then, James confesses he is moving back to London with his mom. Devastated, the girls try to convince James to stay. He and Michelle, who has notoriously tortured her cousin the most, get in a heated quarrel to bar James for leaving. With James gone, their 15 minutes of historic fame comes to a screeching halt. As Clinton approaches the stage, James has returned, missing his flight, exclaiming "I'M A DERRY GIRL!!!!!!!" As I continue to watch through tears, the girl leaves their premium front row seats to be with James, the fifth and final Derry Girl. The episode ends beautifully between montages of the group smiling and reminiscing through Derry, while Clinton's authentic speech for the town is broadcasted in various screens they pass.

S2E04 - The Curse

Not as sentimental as our second runner up, but wow, this episode will leave you hollering. The episode beginnings with a showdown between Ma Mary and Auntie Bridie, which ends up reinforcing the message of "Don't Wish Bad On Others." After Auntie Bridie's heart attack, the wedding they were originally attending turns into funeral planning. Both paranoid and secretly smug, the family returns home to discuss if they are "cursed." Both the family and the girls all gather for another party, where Michelle suggests doing drugs. This creates a partition of those who are curious, and those against it, filled with some screaming from Clare. Though this is Michelle's first attempt at peer pressure, she comes back a hundred times as hard at Aunt Bridie's wake. In the company of her best friends, their deceased aunt, and the rest of Derry, Michelle admits she brought "special" scones to the event. Though Clare, and everyone else, continue to protest, they realize the scones have been openly available - at the funeral. In an attempt to get them away from community members, the group attempts to flush the scones down the toilet. Thus, flooding the wake. Cursed, or just really bad luck, at least Granda Joe brought some scones home for breakfast!
