You don’t need anyone to tell you how you feel about this past inauguration day. You know. Oh, you know. That angst mixed with fear, mixed with shock, mixed with sadness, mixed with anger, mixed with bitterness, mixed with disgust, mixed with embarrassment, mixed with whatever other negative feelings you can throw in there. Yeah, we’ve felt them all.

Those conversations centered around, “What the hell are we going to do?” that go on for hours and sadly never seem to go anywhere. The desperate attempts and talks with Trump supporters to try and get some sort of grasp on “Why?”. In a time like this where many are discussing, jokingly but also with undeniable seriousness, leaving the country all together. I stumbled upon a video that made me want to stay a little longer.

While looking deeply into the face of hatred and constantly jumping societal hurdles that will only get more tiring in the four years to come, I came across a semblance of hope. It was a voice that said, “Hey, I know you expected a lot more…” and aligned with my inner voice of reflection and melancholy before saying, “...but we’re just getting warmed up.” Suddenly, I remembered how far we’ve come in the past 8 years and how, no matter how hard anyone tries, that history cannot be erased.

The piece is portrayed with a retro spin on the classic americana and 90’s indie rock tradition and is nothing short of truthful. It is a lo-fi music video that tells the story of a man who just wants to be accepted, struggling with that need before triumphantly choosing to speak his voice for all to hear. He discovers that everyone else just wants to be heard too. Then, finally, our idea of winning is highlighted and turned on its head in favor of the loser. The pioneering artist behind “#imObama” may be a LitL Brown, but he tackles some big feelings.
