The Brilliance Behind 'Barry' Season 3

Bill Hader does it again.

Once again, Bill Hader and Alec Berg did not fail to deliver an absolutely insane, intense, emotional and brilliant season of HBO's dark comedy 'Barry' created, directed and executive produced by Bill Hader and Alec Berg.

Throughout the season we see Barry dealing with the darkness inside him and we once again begin to question his morality. All leading up to the absolutely incredible season 3 finale, which is one of the best episodes of Barry there is.

Barry season 3 did not fail to deliver amazing writing, directing, editing and cinematography.

Giving us unforgettable shots and moments that were so visually stunning, and scenes that were incredibly well written and directed.

Speaking of writing, Bill Hader and Alec Berg have done such a terrific job of writing this season, With everything that happened in season 3 it's amazing how Bill Hader managed to write and connect everything that happened. When Bill was asked if he knew season 3 was going to end that way he replied, "First day of writing season three on the whiteboard, I wrote down, “Cousineau knows, Barry knows Cousineau knows and throws him in the trunk of a car, and that’s in episode one. Sally’s going to have her own show and at some point it’s going to go away. Cristobal and Hank are a couple. Fuches is going to start a vengeance army. And then last episode, Cousineau catches Barry and Barry goes to jail.” That was always where we were headed as we were writing. During that time, you have to be open enough to go, “Oh, we might get there and say, forget it.” But every step of the way, this just made more sense" With everything going on, you wont want to turn away.

Most of the episodes were directed by Bill and he will be directing all the episodes in season 4.

We saw some stellar performances from the entire cast throughout the season, as this season gave each character a seperate more fleshed out storyline we really got to see what more these actors could bring to the table.

We especially see Sarah Goldberg (Sally), Anthony Carrigan (Noho Hank) and Henry Winkler (Mr Cousinea) step out of their comfort zones and play more intense versions of their characters. We even got to see some in violent settings and some take on situations that their characters would normally never be in. We see a great deal of character development from some of the characters this season.

Once again Bill Hader delivered a top notch, Emmy Worthy performance.

We see Barry in a very different mental state this season, and because of this, Bill got to experiment with different aspects of his character, we got see Bill really flex his muscles as an actor, by taking on different variants of Barry. One was the Barry that was still seeking approval from Mr Cousinea and threatening his family, one was the Barry who genuinely wanted friendship and love in his life and finally, the Barry we see in the finale, a man who has realized where he is going after death and no longer wants to kill. Bill's emotional performance really captures the audience, making them feel for this serial killer. In Episode 7 of season 3, Barry doesnt speak a word throughout the entire episode, and yet Bill managed to deliver a powerful performance. His physical acting on top of his vocal acting and the emotional performances he delivers really bring this character to life so extremely well.

It's been a very eventful season, from car chases to, assassination attempts, red carpets, break ups and more. This has probably been the best season so far.

This storyline, or storylines will have you completely captivated and on edge about what's going to happen next. There is never a dull moment. And just as you think you know whats happening, they surprise you. Over the past 3 seasons the show has evolved way past being just a dark comedy, when Bill was asked the question that many have debated online, if you can still see Barry as a comedy, he responded, "I just see it as a story. I think it’s a comedy because it’s 30 minutes. It’s funny, but it’s also dramatic. People always talk about the tone of the show, and to me, if you’re going to be dealing with stuff like a murderer, domestic violence, PTSD, a gay character put through conversion therapy — it’s really awful stuff. It is not really good to be funny about it. It felt like with this last episode, nothing funny should be in it, but I don’t think that means that from now on that the whole show wasn’t going to be funny." When asked how he thought viewers would feel after the insane Barry Season 3 Finale, this is what Bill Hader had to say, "Like they’re gonna need a drink. It’s pretty rough." Well Bill you were right, you owe us a drink.
