Here's Why Women Will Slay Your Screens In 2020

10 reasons why 2020 is a killer year for women in Hollywood.

2020 is a good year for headstrong females both in front of the screen and in the director's chair. From Marvel to DC to Disney to Bond. We've got a lot of amazing female led and directed films premiering in 2020. Here's a list of the best reasons why our kickass ladies will be slaying in Hollywood in 2020.

    1) Black Widow (May)

The long awaited, long overdue (I mean we literally had to wait for her to die) Black Widow solo movie. This is hands down one of the year's most anticipated movies. After 7 films in the MCU, Scarlett Johansson will finally be taking center stage, with Cate Shortland at the helm, also starring Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz as and David Harbour. Premiering on May 1st. The Black Widow movie is something to be desired when it comes to badass female characters, Natasha Romanoff is the very definition.

    2) Wonder Woman 1984 (June)

She is back... way back... in time. Gal Gadot is back to save the world, this time, shes got Kristen Wiig with her, so you know this is going to be good. This one is going to be a game changer for Diana. Once again directed by Patty Jenkins. It's going to be a wonderful year for Gal Gadot! Releasing on June 5 2020, the movie also stars Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen.

It almost seems unfair to hit us with so much badass in just 1 year with both Wonder Woman and Black Widow premiering just months apart, but bring it on girls!

    3) Bond No Time To Die (April 2020)

No Time to Die is about to take the term "Bond Girl" to a whole new level in Bond 25. This movie alone has so many reasons why its changing the game for our badass ladies in film, it really deserves a list all on its own, but first things first.

The stellar cast. For the first time, a Bond movie will feature four female stars instead of its usual main leading lady. Léa Seydoux, Lashana Lynch, Ana de Armas and Naomie Harris.

"In Bond 25 you have four strong, intelligent women who are responsible for driving the plot forward. They’ve never had that in Bond before.". - Naomie Harris

Another reason being the film has been penned by Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge. And a bonus, Billie Eilish wrote the new theme song. Premiering on April 3rd.

    4) Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (February)

Kicking off the year with the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn. Not only was this historic being DC's very first live action female superhero team up, this was also directed by Cathy Yan, the first Asian female director to helm a DC film. Featuring an amazing cast with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Rosie Perez, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ella Jay Basco.

Birds of Prey was one of the only female superhero movies that really got it right, and by that I dont mean comic to film or anything. It's that it really delivered as a female-driven team-up title. Not to mention it was funny as hell.

    5) The Eternals (November)

    6) Mulan (March)

Disney's biggest live action film of the year has been directed by New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro. Caro is a firm believer in female filmmakers breaking the norm Hollywood. She spoke of how she chose have a female director of photography (Mandy Walker: Hidden Figures) and a female first assistant director, (Liz Tan: Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Hobbit Trilogy) while filming Mulan. The movie stars Yifei Liu, and will be premiering on the 27th of March.

"My mission now with my work is to make it successful, so that I can shove my shoulder into that door, and get as many of the rest of the women through." - Niki Caro

    7) A Quiet Place Part II (March)

John Krasinki's A Quiet Place (2018) brought us a thriller like we had never seen before, it gave us a lot of emotions, and a lot to think about. Now John and Emily Blunt are back for round 2. This time we'll be seeing Emily Blunt take charge as Evelyn Abbot fights to protect her kids in a world without her husband, but full of new terrors.

Starring Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Premiering on March 18th.

    8) WandaVison (August)

After years of being sidelined, Wanda Maximoff is finally ready to step into the spotlight.... and she's gonna stay there this time. Another Marvelous reason is the WandaVision Disney Plus series, which will be premiering this August. Scarlett Witch has always been one of the MCU's most powerful characters, powerful enough to create her own sitcom it would seem. Starring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlett Witch and Paul Bettany as Vision. WandaVision is expected to premiere sometime in August.

According to Paul "This one is gonna be bonkers, and really risky and really new and unlike anything (Marvel has) ever done."

    9) I Am Not Okay With This (February)

You know her best as young Beverly Marsh from IT and It Chapter 2, but get ready to meet Sydney. A not so ordinary teenage girl who has to deal with superpowers on top of the drama of high school, while also dealing with her family's drama and her sexuality. Now these days you can find coming of age stories everywhere, but this one is brought to you from the same minds behind Stranger Things and The End of the F—king World, need I say more?

    10) Making History at The 2020 Oscars

This years Oscars alone saw a number of historic moments, a few for women in particular. Although people were not happy with the many snubs this year, you cant help but feel proud of the accomplishments and the milestones of these extraordinary women.

Hildur Gudnadottir is the first woman to win an Oscar for best original score for Joker. Producer Karen Rupert Toliver became the first Black woman to win an Oscar for an animation for Hair Love alongside Director Matthew A. Cherry. Irish composer and director Eímear Noone became the first woman to conduct the Oscars' 42-piece orchestra. Yet another reason why 2020 is a good year women in Hollywood in all different fields and from different cultures.

Now those are just a few of the things you can expect to see in 2020. It's a big year for female filmmakers and it's going to be a good year when it comes to diversity and change in Hollywood. It certainly feels like it.
