Queen of the Ambundu Kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba located in present-day northern Angola.[1] Born into the ruling family of Ndongo, Nzinga received military and political training as a child, and she demonstrated an aptitude for defusing political crises as an ambassador to the Portuguese Empire. Nzinga fought for the Independence and stature of her kingdoms against the Portuguese in a reign that lasted 37 years.


Much like Nzinga, you are smart, discerning, empathetic, and fearless. You look after those you care about and stand up them as well as yourself. People look up to you to lead and you don’t disappoint.

Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba

A Mongol noblewoman and wrestler, the most famous daughter of Kaidu, a cousin of Kublai Khan and the great- great granddaughter of Genghis Khan, was described as a superb warrior, one who could ride into enemy ranks and snatch a captive as easily as a hawk snatches a chicken. She assisted her father in many battles, particularly against the Yuan Dynasty of her cousin the Great Khan – Kublai. Khutulun insisted that any man who wished to marry her must defeat her in wrestling. Winning horses from competitions and the wagers of would-be suitors, it is said that she gathered a herd numbering ten thousand.

Much like Khutulun, a strategist that could balance the weight of her noble status and her warrior rank, you are a beast at balancing all facets of your personality. You hold your own in any space and demand the respect you know you deserve.

An empress in the Ottaman Empire, as a young girl Roxelana was captured by Tartar soldiers and was sold to a slave market in Istanbul. Despite her beginnings, she rose in station from a slave girl to empress becoming one of the most powerful women in the Ottoman Empire as the wife of Suleiman the Magnificent. By the time she’d earned the title “Hurrem Sultan”, she’d gained her freedom and focused on her political power, channeling her monetary resourcefulness into building charitable institutions, providing jobs for laborers and skilled craftsmen for her beneficent projects. This included charitable foundations like soup kitchens, hostels and mosques for pilgrims in Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem.
Much like Hurrem Sultan, where you started says nothing about where you’ll end up. Just as she was able to become more than anyone ever thought she could, you can as well. Through all her trials she kept her dignity and caring spirit and spread her positivity and light to those around, both seen and unseen. Your temporary circumstances are not your permanent fate.

Hurrem Sultan

A medicine woman, prophetess, midwife, and two-spirit warrior, of the Chihenne Chiricahua Apache, she was the sister of Victorio, a prominent chief. Highly regarded by her brother, he described her as his “right hand ... strong as a man, braver than most, and cunning in strategy. Lozen is a shield to her people”. Lozen was, according to legends, able to use her powers in battle to learn the movements of the enemy. She even fought alongside Geronimo for six years until she was imprisoned at a military arsenal in Alabama. 

Much like Lozen, you are a born leader. Others look to you as their protector, guide, and trust in you to keep them safe. You are fiercely loyal and refuse to back down in the face of injustice. Whether you realize it or not, you are someone’s hero and you do make a difference.

O’Malley was born into a powerful clan that lorded over the coastlines of western Ireland. She continued a family tradition of piracy by plundering English and Spanish shipping vessels and attacking rival chieftains. One tale claims she battled at sea only a day after giving birth. Even after imprisonment, she continued her marauding. Years later, when caught in a legal bind, the 63-year-old buccaneer appealed directly to Queen Elizabeth I for assistance. During a famous royal audience in London, O’Malley portrayed herself as a tired and broken old woman and begged the Queen to return her ships, release one of her captured sons and allow her to retire in peace. The gambit worked, but it seems that “Granuaille” didn’t keep up her end of the bargain—records show that she and her sons continued pirating until her death in 1603.

 Much like Grace you know the game, learned the rules, and refused to let it play you. Despite what people tell you of their misguided ideas of your limitations, you show time and time again that they are wrong. If need be, you know how to use the same ideas that they tried to control you with to your advantage. You’re a boss and if that weren’t evident in the beginning, you make sure it’s known by the end.
