How Law And Order: SVU Helped Me Heal

This is my story. DUN DUN. This is for the Editorial Fellowship.

    The Beginning

When I was young, I would sneak late at night to watch the show. I wasn't allowed to watch it because of the mature content, but I'm so glad I did. From a young age, I was able to recognize abuse and psychological tendencies of abusers. It lead to me watching everyone around me and making efforts to stay safe. I didn't fully understand everything I saw on the show, but I was quickly learning.

    The Dark Years

I was a victim of abuse in high school. I was naive but my partner at the time was so charming that I let my guard down. I would frequently go back to episodes where I saw the same thing happening to me that happened to victims in the show. The memories of the show are what lead me to reach out and get help. Olivia Benson was a beacon of hope for me. She represented safety and empowerment, and I was all about it. I trusted that I would find help as dedicated as she was, and I was able to break free.

    To Be Continued....

Now that I am no longer in an abusive relationship and I have experienced healing through therapy, I have a clear head and can look back at the signs I missed, or resources I could have used. I use what I've learned from the show to help my friends get out of difficult situations or help them heal. While I am not a professional. the writers of this show have done a solid job of informing views of ways to seek help. I have seen all 512 episodes, and I don't plan on stopping unless they do.

Is there an SVU episode that helped you or someone through a difficult time?
