Ten Steps To A Successful Job Search

When doing a job search becomes a part time job follow these ten simple steps.

1. Take the time to get to know yourself

What are your interests, strengths, and abilities? What are your short- and long-term career goals? This may help point you in the right direction for a specific industry or job.

2. Create the appropriate documents

Draft a resume, CV, cover letter, research summary, education philosophy, etc and have them critiqued by Chemical Sciences Career Services.

3. Make your job search a part-time job

Set aside a few hours a week to apply for positions. Utilize ACS Careers/C&EN Careers, Chemjobs.net, CareerEngineer.AICHE.org, and I-Link for your job search.

4. Network Network Network

Talk to faculty advisor, alumni, family members, friends, and engage in online networking.

5. Use LinkedIn

Create a LinkedIn profile. Use the linked.com/alumni tool to find alums who may be working at companies you're interested in.

6. Register with scientific staffing companies

Make sure they don't charge you to register.

7. Attend a career-related workshop

Many companies come to campus for information sessions, coffee chats, and other networking events. These are great opportunities to get noticed by asking questions.

8. Schedule a Mock Interview with the SCS Career Services Office.

A mock interview is an exercise that simulates a real job interview. They are a great way to practice answering questions, receive real-time feedback, and ask any questions you may have about the interviewing process.

9. Dress to impress

Put together an interview outfit that includes a leather portfolio, professional briefcase/purse, shoes, suit, and accessories.

10. Bring Slides

If you are a graduate student, prepare a condensed version of paper slides (4-7) of your research and research summary.
