The zodiac signs are the constellations on the sky through which the Sun projects itself from the perspective of Earth as the Earth travels on the orbit around it. So, you are e.g. Leo, because the Sun was "in that sign" on the sky when you were born (but you wouldn't see it because of the daylight). These constellations are on the sky just like the other of the 88 constellations, but this is how these 12 were selected.

There are actually 13 constellations through which Sun projects itself, not 12 - but the number 13 has been always considered unlucky and so the constellation of Ophiuchus was dropped. As a result, the borders of the other constellations had to be shifted to create a continuous cycle and thus do not represent reality.

Through which signs the Sun projects itself from the viewpoint of the Earth depends on Earth's tilt. Earth's tilt is, however, always changing due to processes we call precession and nutation. For that reason, so will the ranges of the zodiac signs! Therefore, if you check the zodiac signs in the future, they might be different again!
