Sainsbury's Bank Accused Of "Trivialising" Credit Cards In TV Ad

The Advertising Standards Authority has called the retailer "socially irresponsible".

An advert for Sainsbury's Bank has been banned by the ASA for "trivialising" the process of taking out credit.

The ad, which appeared in June, showed a real couple talking about using a credit card to help finance the renovation of their house.

The ASA said that comments featured in the advert, including “We kind of went in head-first really” and “We definitely bit off more than we could chew”, implied the additional costs were as a result of "reckless decisions".

The advert is interspersed with clips of cartoon bulls charging towards a building to knock it down and a small dog with a rather large bone.

The ASA said the overall impression of the ad trivialised the potential consequences of using credit.

It said the "impression" created by the ad was that a credit card could be used to pay for problems that arise during non-essential projects.

The "lack of emphasis" on the potential risks of using credit "trivialised the process of taking out credit and was therefore irresponsible", it ruled.

Defending the advert, Sainsbury’s told the ASA the bank managed lending in a responsible way and said it did believe that the ad was irresponsible.

BuzzFeed News contacted Sainsbury's, but it did not respond to requests for comment.
