I've always been drawn to the dark and demure — I mean, I do live in New York City and the stereotype that we always wear black is definitely true. Even so, I find it baffling that black cats in shelters tend to have difficulty being adopted. But alas, people will always have their superstitions, sadly. It wasn't until photographer Shaina Fishman's project highlighting black rescue dogs and the trouble they have finding homes when I realized that it wasn't just an issue with cats.

BuzzFeed spoke with Fishman, and she told us that black dogs tend to be adopted less often than others, and they are most likely to be euthanized. With 20% of the 3.3 million dogs in shelters nationwide being euthanized each year according to the ASPCA, this is a big issue for dark doggos. Fishman is a commercial photographer specializing in animals, and decided she wanted to use her talents to highlight the beauty of these dogs in an effort to help more pretty pups get adopted.
