How To Figure Out What You Want In Your Career!

Most of us, at one time or another, have felt stuck in our career, like we're spinning the wheels, but unable to shift a gear. And when we are stuck, it can be difficult to even think about the next step. So have a think about your current job. What do you love about it, what do you hate! Make a list of the pros and cons. Then consider what feedback you have been given at work, what are you recognised for, and where have you been told you can improve. And be honest - do you want to improve on those areas, or quite frankly, do they bore you to tears. I am firm believer that whilst we can improve certain skills, if we don't like those particular areas, then we need to find jobs or roles that have less of those areas. For example, I am not a detailed person, so doing a role which involves a lot of working on details will not suit me, but I am good at planning and big picture thinking - and that's been reflected in my career choice. Most of us can get a job - but is it the right one? There's little point trying to fit a square peg in a round hole! What are you doing when the time flies - when you are really in the zone - again this gives you more clues about what might suit you? Which companies do you admire, and which roles have you seen that have really caught your eye? What is it about those roles or companies that is attractive to you? What is important to you at work - is it remuneration, social contribution, entrpreneurship, creativity, recognition, team work, working along, flexible working, bonuses and other perks, travel, the culture - these start to show what you value about the work you do and again write these down in a list. A lot of this is getting out of the mindset of 'I'm stuck' and telling yourself 'I'm on the right path to a job I love' just try shifting that energy and your internal chatter to start becoming aware of opportunities out there! Dedicate time each week, when you are relaxed, to working through these questions and see what themes appear. We spend a lot of time at work and finding something you love will increase your happiness in other areas of your life. There are so many opportunities out there, once you start pondering these questions and opening your mind to them!
